Approval of minutes of the October 2, 2024, regular meeting 24-1540 RESULT: APPROVED MOVER: Seth Flanders SECONDER: Zoe Hastert Aye: 8 Arney, Deaton, Flanders, Hastert, Horky, Hoverman, Ostrenga, and Zimmerman Excused: 3 McClellan, Riebe, Schmitt-Ernst, and Dolan NEW BUSINESS 1. Announcements and upcoming activities/events 24-1541 Wauwatosa’s comprehensive plan is now available online. Public comments are encouraged. A detailed discussion will be added to the December agenda. America Recycles Day is Friday, November 15th. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 2. Electrification presentation to Council 24-1542 Page 1 of 3 Sustainability Committee Meeting Minutes - Final November 13, 2024 Mike Arney will present a brief overview of the topic to the Community Affairs Committee on December 3rd. Other WSC members are encouraged to attend. Mike Arney shared this podcast link on electrification: https://www.volts.wtf/p/how-is-electrification-going. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 3. Sustainability manager updates 24-1543 A 0.5FTE position remains in the City’s budget for 2025. We discussed how WSC can support that position. Ideas will be shared with Dave Simpson during Mike Arney’s call with him on Friday, November 15th. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 4. WLGCC, GTLC updates 24-1544 Heather Deaton shared highlights from WLGCC’s recent member meeting . New City of Milwaukee 1.0 FTE sustainability position funded by federal grant will be allocated to the near suburban cities (Wauwatosa, Shorewood, and West Allis) and will focus on energy efficiency in existing building . Mike Arney reported that GTLC is updating its scoresheet for 2025 . This year’s version provided a lot of new content for the next sustainability report. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 5. Public outreach at the library 24-1545 Zoe Hastert shared details of a kids’ movie day at the library. Wall-E will be shown at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12th. She asked for ideas of short documentaries that could also be shared that day . WSC members are encouraged to attend to help answer questions . RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 6. Schools update (net zero task force, composting) 24-1546 Net Zero task force was approved by the school board . No news on appointments. Steve Ostrenga attended a conference that discussed options for solar retrofits that is applicable to Wauwatosa’s school buildings. Madison School District is hiring a sustainability manager. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 7. Housing coalition updates 24-1547 Their last meeting was on Tuesday, November 12th. Mike Arney and Rob Zimmerman will provide an update on their work during the December meeting. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 8. Sustainability web page/ social posts via City 24-1548 Heather Deaton met with Eva Ennamorato, who asked for ideas for Facebook posts on sustainability topics. Heather is compiling a list of topics for winter months and will share those with Eva . Heather will send out the list of topics and links for the sustainability webpage for feedback from WSC, then present with Eva. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 9. Future meeting topics, guest presenter ideas 24-1549 Katherine Riebe recommends Martin Ventura from UW Extension to speak about urban gardening . John Page 2 of 3 Sustainability Committee Meeting Minutes - Final November 13, 2024 Horky recommends Brady Steigauf from Focus on Energy to discuss the HOMES and HEAR rebate programs. Steve Ostrenga recommends Tom Content, or someone from Citizens’ Utility Board to speak about energy issues and rates in Wisconsin. RESULT: INFORMATIONAL ONLY 10. Membership/ leadership in 2025 24-1550 Mike Arney reminded members whose terms are expiring to renew if they want to continue . Mike also is completing his second year as Chair, so will need to step away from that role . Any members interested in serving as Chair, Vice Chair, or Secretary should let him know .
