Main Street, Weaverville, N.C. 1. Call to Order Tree Board Members Present: Chairman Russ Kantner, Patrice Sheehan and Gary Harmon, Inger Stallman Jorgensen, William Mobley, Andrew Shelton, and Eleanor Mrozkowski. Absent: Pauline Griffith, Caleb Hudson Staff Present: Town Clerk Tamara Mercer Kieth Aitkin, City of Asheville Arborist 2. Adopt or Amend Agenda Andrew Shelton moved to adopt agenda as presented. Carried unanimously. 7-0. 3. Approval of Minutes Inger Stallman Jorgenson moved to approve the Meeting minutes as presented. Carried unanimously. 7-0. 4. Arbor Day April Program recap Discussion included program logistics, tasks divided, winners of People Choice awards, and the planning stage. Chair Kantner said that in 2025, he enjoyed having the smaller children although the older student participation was a great success with over 87 middle and high school students submitting their poems or artwork (15 pieces) for the Arbor Day Young Artists' Competition. 5. Arbor Day Foundation Tree give-away June 6th at the Main Street Nature Park music series the Tree Board to give-away red Cedars, red Maple, Redbud, and Witch-hazel trees to the public. The Town will set-up the tent and table and Mike will announce the opportunity to the audience. Show starts at 6:00 p.m., and volunteers are Eleanor, Patrice, Russ and Gary. 6. Tree Board Ordinance Code Chapter 2 Members reviewed each category and assigned numeric priorities as 1=high priority, addressed in 12 months; 2=medium priority, addressed in 24 months; 3=lower priority, addressed in 36 months; 0=proposed deletion. Staff summarized the previous goals attained and completed such Davey Group conducted tree inventory & canopy assessment: completed in 2025. Updated chart table to accompany the Tree Board’s goals and priorities list. Page 2 of 10  Procedural process for designating heritage and treasured trees with signage. Arborist Keith Aitken noted the caliper used for Asheville's size class and species to rate a heritage tree, for example 24" or 30" class. Russ said upcoming grants with the NC Urban Forestry may allow for tree maintenance costs for towns so we should plan to seek such funding for that, Keith added that there may also be funding for towns to certify arborist or for the workforce to achieve IISA certifications. Russ noted that he would send out an example email for other towns that have implemented a tree squad and tree keepers, as well as the 'tree bank' program. Patrice questioned if there is money to remove invasives in the parks, and staff shall follow-up. 7.
