Updates
Jan Shapiro discusses receiving lengthy emails from Dave Buck about the Arts
Commission and his suggestions. The commission is considering adding a public
comment section to their meetings to address community feedback. After discussion,
they vote to allow public comments with a three-minute limit per speaker.
Public Art Plan
The commission members suggest updating the public art plan by emphasizing
gateways, nodes, and paths while avoiding overly specific details. Also proposes
incorporating future city developments and master plans into the public art criteria rather
than preexisting sites. They mention organizing a document to reaffirm the commission's
purpose and updating related ordinances.
City of the Arts Banners
Staff and the mayor need consensus on the city banners' background style, layout, and
colors. The commission reviewed previous meetings and suggestions, focusing on
maintaining the city's branding language and legibility. They discussed using a pre-
existing logo and design, considering input from the original designer, John A. Horn, and
emphasized simplicity and readability in the final design to ensure it stands out and
meets the timeline requirements. The members discussed using a new font for the city of
the Arts banners and potentially revisiting the design in a year, emphasizing artistic
representation over text-based slogans, with a preference for maintaining the current
artistic style while exploring community input for future iterations.
Sculpture Garden Signs
Sculpture garden signs have been ordered, and there are no further updates or issues
reported.
Other updates for information
Staff updated that the board's annual report is due May 2nd; staff will resend the email to
Jan if she hasn’t received it from Katie. Report outlines plan, achievements, and budget
alignment; simple to fill out, needed before next meeting.
City Update
The Lakota group is working on a comprehensive plan and will visit this commission and
others for input. Additionally, today is election day, and budget planning requires each
board and commission to outline their activities and plans for the next year.
Adjournment
