REMARKS OF VISITORS Michael Peters – Shop Steward for WGFD Local 2665 – Spoke about the termination of Captain Jason Simpson (See Exhibit A). Eric Eoloff – 30 Gray Ave. – Thanked Mayor Arnold for the character she displayed during the campaign. He stated that he thinks the new Council is made of thoughtful and committed people. I know you will study the issues and make good judgments. Dave Buck – 124 S. Elm Ave. – welcomed the new Mayor and Council, thanked Gerry for her service, and sang a song about Webster Groves (See Exhibit B). Today the City lost a great asset, a respected Fire Captain, and a personal mentor of mine. After over 18 years of service Captain Jason Simpson was fired this morning. He wasn’t fired because of anything he did but because he could not recover from his work related back injury fast enough. Captain Simpson not only is, I mean was a leader in this Department but was asked by this City during his time here as an employee and shop leader to lead City supported campaigns such as the one to bring Lagers pensions to Webster Groves, then later he lead the charge to get the entire city a higher pension benefit. Captain Simpson was asked and lead the proposition to fund the construction of our new firehouse 2, he was the architect of the City and Union’s first Collective Bargaining Agreement, and he even helped several of you get into office not so long ago. Captain Simpson hurt his back on duty, did everything he could do to get back on a truck only to reinjure it last August. Since then Jason had surgery, has attended countless doctors appointments, hours and hours of rehab and Physical therapy, not to mention the sleepless nights trying to make the pain go away. Jason works light duty and attended 4 hour a day work hardening sessions 5 days a week, working harder and harder after the City gave him a hard date that he had to heal by. But in the end he was just trying to get back on a fire truck. Now after all this Jason is without a job, still hurt, and has been abandoned by the City that has asked so much from him. What is going on here? This is Webster Groves. Recently, a Fire Captain with a similar injury was allowed much more consecutive days to heal from his injury and has since returned to work and has even been promoted. This was less then two years ago. Not Jason though I guess. We used to be a city that supplemented pay to our armed forces when deployed overseas, but not any more. This used to be a city that paid 50% of sick time to all of its retirees as promised, but not anymore. Neither Gerry or I will ever forget that moment but, to her great credit, she forgave me, she never gave up on me, she believed in me and we became good friends.   And that, my friends, is called character. And I will never forget it and I will never forget her and the difference she has made in my life. I wish Gerry was here, in the audience.
