Members Marcia Hayden, Francine Nelson, Shelly Albright, Donna Baxter, Beth Gillespie and Ruthan Retterbush were present at the start of the meeting. John Webber arrived late. IV Opening Comments V Approval of Agenda Marcia Hayden asked for a motion to reorder the agenda to have the staff report take place immediately following approval of the agenda and minutes to facilitate the High Impact Teacher presentations. Donna Baxter made the motion, seconded by Beth Gillsepie. Motion passed unanimously. VI Approval of Minutes A. EC-049 APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH 7, 2017 REGULAR MEETING Ruthann Retterbush made the motion, seconded by Shelly Albright to approve the minutes of the March 7, 2017 meeting. Motion passed unanimously. VII Old Business VIII New Business A. EC-050 RECOGNITION OF WELLINGTON'S HIGH IMPACT TEACHERS FOR 2017 Marcia Hayden welcomed Mayor Gerwig, Vice Mayor McGovern and Councilwoman Siskind to the meeting. She stated that the Committee would be recognizing this year's High Impact Teachers. Mayor Gerwig would begin the presentations. Mayor Gerwig stated that Councilman Napoleone was on his way and would also participate in the presentations. Mayor Gerwig, Vice Mayor McGovern, Councilwoman Siskind and Councilman Napoleone presented plaques to the principals of each of the 11 schools in recognition of their High Impact Teachers. The principals then called up their teachers in attendance and group photos were taken for each school. Village of Wellington Page 1 Education Committee Action Summary May 2, 2017 After the presentations, all attendees were invited to a reception in the Village Hall lobby. IX Public Comments X Staff Report Paulette Edwards provided the staff report. The Waste Management scholarship recipients had been selected. Two scholarships would be awarded to each of the high schools as well as book scholarships for the other schools. Wellington had conducted a mentoring and internship program utilizing CDBG funds. This year's program, entitled SWAG (Students Working to Achieve Goals), would fund five students from each high school. Students would be selected by their guidance counselors for participation in the program. The internships would be at area businesses including Wellington Regional Hospital and the State Attorney's Office. The program was a partnership between Wellington and InterFaith. Students would also participate in weekly mentorship programs. The summer would include coordination with Mr. Wenham and the Community Foundation for additional programs.
