City of West Allis Meeting Minutes Police and Fire Commission Wednesday, April 12, 2023 5:30 PM West Allis Police Department 11301 W. Lincoln Ave. NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING AND CLOSED SESSION A. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Koppin called the meeting to order at 5:32 pm B. POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION 1. The purpose of this special meeting and closed session is to interview candidates for the position of Police Officer for the West Allis Police Department. In open session Commissioner Romain stated that she knew one of the Police Officer candidates as he had been a student of hers in her role as a Professor at UWM. City Attorney Kail Decker was contacted and he confirmed that Commissioner Romain would not need to recuse herself for this reason. Commissioner Romain stated for the record that she knew the candidate in a professional capacity and can be objective during the interview process. 2. Request for approval: Establish police department eligibility list. A motion was made by Commissioner Kopplin and seconded by Commissioner Romain to approve this request. The motion carried by the following votes: Aye: 3, Commissioners Romain, Kopplin and Cosby Nay: 0 3. Request for approval: Hire from established police department eligibility list. CLOSED SESSION PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners of the City of West Allis will meet on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 5:30 pm at 11301 W. Lincoln Avenue, West Allis Wisconsin, 53227, in open session to consider and vote on a motion to convene in closed session at said time and place, to interview candidates for the position of Police Officer and to take such further action as may be necessary and appropriate in this matter. A closed session for the above purpose is authorized pursuant to the provisions of Section 19.85(1)(c) of the Wis. Stats. which permits a governmental body upon motion duly made and carried, to convene in closed session for the purpose of considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility. Immediately upon the completion of the closed session, the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners will reconvene in open session at said time and place to consider any other matters on the agenda. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that members of the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners of the City of West Allis may be present prior to 5:30 pm, however, no business matters will be discussed or acted upon prior to 5:30 pm. On a motion made and seconded, the meeting convened into closed session at 5:34 pm Four (4) Police Officer candidates were interviewed. On a motion made and seconded, the meeting reconvened into open session at 7:45 pm E. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, on a motion made and seconded, the meeting adjourned at 7:46 pm.
