The meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m.

1. 17-00010 History of Room Tax and Legislation

2. 17-00011 Purpose, Powers and Duties
Ms. Grill presented an overview of the history of the room tax, state legislation, and
city ordinance.
In July 2015, the Wis Act 55 was passed which required municipalities to spend 70%
of room tax revenue on tourism promotion and tourism development (30% can remain
with general municipal services). A portion must be given to a tourism commission or
tourism entity.
Tourism Promotion and Tourism Development is marketing projects, transient tourism
informational service, or tangible municipal development, including a convention
center.
The role of the Commission is to coordinate tourism promotion and development. The
Tourism Commission shall contract with another organization if no Tourism Entity
exists in the municipality.

D. MATTERS FOR DISCUSSION/ACTION
3. 17-00012 Options for Tourism Marketing, Promotion, and Tourism Development
Mayor Devine indicated this initiative could be overseen by our Communications
Department. Committee members then brainstormed possible tourism marketing,
promotion and development opportunities.
Opportunities
· Have an actual office.
· Create Visit West Allis website - visitwestallis.com.
· Work with BID, Chamber, Wisconsin State Fair, Travel Wisconsin.
· Contact West Milwaukee if they would like to partner due to Best Western.
· Advertise in airline magazines and AAA.
· Packages for stay, eat and play.
· Focus on small restaurants.
· Visitmilwaukee.org - pay for advertising.
· Social media - Facebook (boosting), Instagram.
· Rack brochures for freeway/highway waysides.
· Get intern for social media assistance (Concordia University Hospitality and
Event Management program).
· Sell membership to convention and visitors bureau.
· Website proposals.

· Farmers Market.
· Unique restaurants (eatwestallis.com).
· Inspiration Studios.
4. 17-00013 2017 Tourism Budget
No discussion at this time. Hold off until 2017 City budget is passed.

Website RFP.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 6:55 p.m. The motion carried.

All meetings of the Tourism Commission are public meetings. In order for the general public to make comments at the committee meetings, the individual(s) must be scheduled
(as an appearance) with the chair of the committee or the appropriate staff contact; otherwise, the meeting of the committee is a working session for the committee itself, and
discussion by those in attendance is limited to committee members, the mayor, other alderpersons, staff and others that may be a party to the matter being discussed.
