Call to Order: Chair Patricia Rublein called the meeting to order at 3:03 p.m.
Attending: Patricia Rublein, Susan Corbett, Robert Leek, Tom Phelps, Robin Phillips, Nancy
Sullivan, Barbara Vollmer, Nick Vrettos, and Tourist Specialist Joanna Skrabala. Absent:
Georgianna Avioli.
Minutes: Minutes of January 18, 2022, were approved as submitted.
Remarks from the Chair:
• Announced the formation of a Nominating Committee composed of Susan Corbett and
Robin Phillips. The Committee is to prepare a proposed slate of officers for the 2022-
2023 year and present it in writing two weeks prior to the May18 meeting.
• Funding for the WAAC grants will remain the same in both the City of Williamsburg’s and
James City County’s FY23 proposed budgets.
• Reported that Panglossian Productions may withdraw its FY23 grant request. Tom
Phelps moved if Panglossian Productions submits a written document requesting
withdrawal of recommended funding, the funds be reallocated to other grant requests.
Nick Vrettos seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Old Business:
The Chair reported the summary of the Venue Needs Survey results has been shared
with City of Williamsburg Mayor Douglas Pons and members of the City Council. It will also be
presented to the James City County and York County Commissioners. The Venue Needs
Survey Report is posted on the WAAC website.
New Business
• Reallocation of monies should Panglossian Productions elect to withdraw its FY23 grant
request: Susan Corbett moved to increase the grant funding in the amount of $400 for
each of the following organizations: Institute for Dance, Opera in Williamsburg,
Williamsburg Choral Guild, Williamsburg Players, and the Williamsburg Symphony
Orchestra. The motion passed.
• Commissioners agreed June is the best date for a joint meeting with the York County
Arts Commission. The date to be determined after consultation with the York County
officials.
• Year end report forms for the FY 21 grantees are posted on the WAAC website.
• Commissioners agreed to periodically invite grantees to present at WAAC meetings to
acquaint the Commission with their activities and programs. Two groups will be invited to
the May meeting.
The meeting concluded with reports of FY22 grantees activities presented by the various
commissioners.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 4:25 p.m. The next meeting will be May 18 at 3:00.
