AGENDA City of Williamsburg Williamsburg Area Arts Commission Wednesday, January 17, 2024 A meeting of the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in the Stryker Center (Room 127), 412 N Boundary St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 commencing at 9:00 AM. The purpose of this meeting is to make final funding recommendation based on review of applications from designated non-profit organizations. Commissioners should plan for an all-day meeting. Boundary St., 23185 Call to order: Chair Thomas Phelps called the meeting to order at 2:58 pm. Attending: Thomas Phelps, Robin Phillips, Barbara Vollmer, Susan Corbett, Robert Leek, Nick Vrettos, Nancy Sullivan Georgianna Avioli. Joanna Skrabala, Tourism Development Specialist Minutes: Minutes of September 20, 2023 meeting were approved after one correction from Tom. Talk to organizations about arts – example is Chamber of Commerce not Rotary Club. Chair report: Chair, Tom Phelps submitted to the City our request for more funds; he added that we have more art groups requesting funds. Tom has also been attending concerts in the area and mentioned that he was not aware of so many opportunities when he first arrived in Williamsburg. Arts Performance Center is a “done deal”. Joanna elaborated about City funding ($100,000 for first two years then $1,000,000 after; probably need for fund raising also) and great support for the venue. The Arts Center project has been in the public interest for at least thirty years. Staff report: a) FY 25 Application Update & Review Process Joanna distributed spread sheet of our grantees with updates of their progress toward completion. We will be able to download our comments and/or print them as we evaluate. b) Both the Sports Center and the Arts Center will be in construction simultaneously. c) New Commissioner: Sarah Balascio Sarah will join us January 17, 2024 and Tom will introduce her at the beginning of our Grant review session. Subcommittee reports: a) FY 24 Forum Planning Robin asked for review of the promotion flyer created by the committee and asked for suggestions for final copy. Robin will resend the final copy to commissioners after making some changes. Flyer is colorful and clearly conveys our theme of Board Development. Page 2 of 3 Christ Wininger will connect with Arts for Learning and IDance to assess needs of arts groups. Robin elaborated on Chris’s strategy for the Forum presentation. b) Joanna will send: Save the Date – mid-December Invitation and registration information– January 8 Forum – February 8, 2024 9:00 am – 12:00pms Liaison Reports: Each commissioner reported on activities, plans and progress of their grantees.
