Meeting Minutes
WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2024
▪ CALL TO ORDER: Robert Hadley called the May 1, 2024 CAAB meeting to order at 7p.m. in the Commission Chambers.
▪ PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Robert led the Pledge of Allegiance.
▪ ROLL CALL: Johnnie took roll call: Robert Hadley, Gene Stinson, and Justin Gladney were present. Glenn Jenkins
notified Johnnie earlier in the day that he was ill and would not be in attendance. With Glenn’s absence and the prior
resignations of Marc Marois, Scott Ballina, and Curtis Fedder there was no quorum reached for this meeting. As such, no
Board action (motions/votes) could be made in this meeting.
▪ UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
a.) History Month Honoree Nomination Forms – Gene’s proposal of changes for the nomination forms and the creation of
a scoring process were shared with CAAB members. These were reviewed and discussed. Continued discussion will
occur in the June CAAB meeting with determination of any direction on this matter.
▪ NEW BUSINESS:
a.) Review 2023/2024 CAAB goals (Gene): Identify what is completed and prioritize outstanding goals. Johnnie shared
CAAB’s previously created 2023/2024 goals listing. There was discussion on completed/outstanding tasks – continued
discussion will occur in the June CAAB meeting with determination of prioritization of outstanding goals.
▪ BOARD MEMBER REPORTS AND REQUEST FOR AGENDA ITEMS: Robert reported that he attended the
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon but was the only CAAB member in attendance, and noted that he did not think the event
was very well attended; Johnnie reported that Leisure Services will look at changing the format of this event in the future.
Gene stated that in the last CAAB meeting he shared his concern that selection of Mike Sansevero as a Community Spirit
award honoree could come across as a campaign endorsement and less than 10 minutes after the meeting was over he
received a text from Mike Sansevero telling him how disappointed and hurt he was that he did not support his nomination
after all he had done for the community. Gene further stated that this exchange made him even more comfortable in voicing
his concern. Justin suggested that in the future CAAB consider excluding those actively campaigning for office from
consideration as honorees; Gene suggested looking at other restrictions as well, such as should CAAB members even be
allowed to submit nominations. Robert noted the challenge with getting nominations and stated that although the call is in
the Town Crier but no one reads it and no one thinks it is important. Johnnie stated that he feels it to be more a matter of
what people are interested in doing rather than outreach efforts – the city did a call for participants in the America City photo
shoot – in the same manner as asking for nominations – and about 300 people showed up.
▪ NEXT SCHEDULED MEETING DATE: Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 7p.m. – Chambers.
▪ ADJOURNMENT: Meeting concluded at 7:30p.m.
