7/7/2022 - Minutes I. Call to Order Members Present: Prudence Doherty, Collette Khajehali, and Colleen Moore City Staff Present: Nate Eddy Guests Present: None Call to Order by: Prue Meeting Start Time: 6:35 PM Minutes Recorded by: Collette II. Approve Previous Meeting Minutes Minute approval tabled to the next meeting. Will approve minutes from 6.2.22 and 7.7.22. III. Public Comment None IV. Committee Member Updates No major updates from the members. V. Library Updates June programs: l STEAM on Saturdays, over 10 kids every Saturday. Kirstin is good at identifying activities for the kids. Very good turnout and result. l June started the monthly movie matinee on Friday. 4 kids last time. Showed a movie in the studio. l Story times are continuing to happen as well as play groups. Story time to THRIVE summer camp. l Lego club - 6 kids came today. New set of legos. l Kicked off summer reading program - over 80 kids signed up. 50 tickets raffled to Vermont Green Football club. Gave 10 tickets originally and Nate emailed to say thank you, which resulted in receiving 40 more. Books to raffle up. Off beat creemee for kids to get free creemee. All for the end of year summer send off for kids on August 24th (Wednesday). l Adult side - Book club and Writing group continuing. ESL continues and restorative justice circle. Two Saturdays ago - volunteers to offer adults IT assistance. Coffee on Fridays - a good turn out and a good time. l Bike mobile repair unit - 14 people came out and 5 came yesterday. Next one is on Elm Street - where a lot more kids are. l Intervale Veggies - next Wednesday - Intervale will start free veggie produce give away until Nov 9th. Bring your own bag. 4pm-6pm. Feeding Chittenden will also join. l Nate attended the Winooski Farmer's Market a couple of Sundays ago; signed folks up  Fridays - a good turn out and a good time. l Bike mobile repair unit - 14 people came out and 5 came yesterday. Had an interview today and more tomorrow. We may be having a teen assistant join us for the summer. Thrive and parks. 16 years or older. One position exists for the library side. Monthly stats l We had a strong June. All stats up in every category. Perhaps as a result of kids being out of school. Increase in families coming in and checking out books. l Hoopla was launched on June 15th - on demand. e-books, etc. 18 folks signed up so far. Need to continue to promote. l This week removed expired cards: 1,789 card holders that expired 5 years or longer (as of July 1, 2017 and prior to that date). Reduced to 3,267 total library cards. Of that, 1,766 unexpired cards and 1,496 are expired. Every fiscal year will continue to purge to understand how many card holders we actually have. l Stay Healthy Connected People Commission meeting will be next week - Nate will not be able to attend because he will be out of town so aiming for September to be the month that we present at said meeting. l We will not have a library committee meeting in August due to schedules. VI. Applications for Committee Vacancy l We received two applications for library committee members. Don't expect to make any decisions tonight; plus we have to interview people. l Would have to have an executive session to even discuss them. When to schedule the interviews? What time works best? Please send Nate dates and times in the next few weeks for possible interview dates. l Can we tell the applicants that we only have one vacancy and it's a three year term. Interviews should be conducted during the week and sometime after 5 PM. Thursdays are not ideal. VII. Youth Committee Position l A framework for developing a position description. A bit different or tailored to someone younger vs the current description. How to define a youth member for this committee. A high school student? Is that 13-18? If you are in school? There are some kids over 18 that attend WHS. l One year position. Member agreement for only one year term. Teen residents and not just limited to high school students. Category is teen residents. Suggested age range from 13-graduation or equivalent. Just the school year or a full year? Recommendation is to focus on the school year and summer is optional. l Does this need to be included into by-laws? or an addendum? l Would this position have to go before the city council? We think so. l When do we want this to start? Nailing down frame work and starting FY24 (starting June 2023). Thinking we could start recruiting and the application process could start as early as May 2023. (perhaps Nate can get some feedback from the youth group he is affiliated with). It would give us time to apply recruiting methods and how we are reaching kids to present this opportunity. l Should there be a stipend attached to the position? That would need city admin input. l Could the hours that are put in be used for credit hours for school? Will need to find out. Might be used for school volunteer requirements, if needed. ¡ Categories: leadership experience, collaborative experience, community  affiliated with). It would give us time to apply recruiting methods and how we are reaching kids to present this opportunity. l Should there be a stipend attached to the position? Could be used for college applications. l Nate will look into bylaws and city council approval. And need a calendar to ensure we meet all the right needs and approvals. Find out if Winooski HIgh School has volunteer requirements for their students. Maybe for Eagle Scouts credit. Open on how the credit can be used. Could be a volunteer or stipend depending on the need of the volunteer. l If we are still using Zoom for meetings, it could be limiting for some young people who might have limited internet connectivity from home. l We could be the leaders in spearheading this effort of having a youth committee position.
