Park Board Yukon Park Board Minutes January 18, 2023 at 6 p.m. The Yukon Park Board met in regular session at 6:00pm on Wednesday, January 18th, at the Yukon Community Center, 2200 Holly Avenue, Yukon, OK 73099. I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Joe Edwards, President. II. Roll Call ROLL CALL: (Present) Joe Edwards, Chairman – Ward 1 Joe Baumann, Vice Chairman – Ward 4 Stephen Nelson – Ward 2 Tim Rhodes – At Large OTHERS PRESENT: Ryan McClure, Parks and Recreation Director Casey Barnett, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Bryan Kelley, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Justin Chapman, Yukon Community Center Manager III. Visitors/Special Guests/Public Comments There were no public comments. IV. Approval of the minutes from November 16, 2022 The board began with reading of the minutes from the November meeting. Joe Baumann moved that they accept the minutes as written, Stephen Nelson seconded. Passed. V. Parks and Recreation Department Report and Project Updates Ryan McClure introduced the board to Justin Chapman, the Yukon Community Center Manager. Justin gave his bio – Six Flags in Pennsylvania and New York. Justin wanted to move back to Oklahoma, and he likes “creating memories” for recreation program participants. City of Yukon | P. O. Box 850500 | Yukon, OK 73085 Park Board 1. Projects a. Welch Park Disc Golf Course i. Design has been completed. ii. Construction will begin next week, weather pending. - Applying for a grant for ADA compliant sidewalk. Joe Edwards got a letter written to help with that. b. DRC Partition Wall i. Delayed from February 20th due to winter snowstorms. c. Freedom Trail Playground and Splashpad i. City Council approved Rudy Construction contract at the Council meeting last night ($1,682,221.28) d. Baseball i. Batting cages (1 large, 1 large divided into 2 cages) coming in February. - Joe Edwards asked about availability to softball as well. ii. Baseball backstop replacements in February e. City Park and Kimbell Park Tennis/Pickleball courts i. Bids due on 1/30 ii. Fencing will be a separate project. f. Aquatic facilities i. $37,492 in capital funds moved from YCC exterior renovation to aquatics repairs/improvements. **removing diving boards 1. Rock wall 2. Pool paint 3. Lane lines 4. Lily pads 5. Actuator for chair lift 6. Splashpad concrete repairs 7. Program and safety supplies g. YCC parking lot lights - Doing research to ensure that everything is up to code with our ADA parking spots before updating lighting h. DRC HVAC system i. RFQ’s have been received and interview process is taking place for architectural services; from there, architectural group will work on bid specifications to go out to bid. i. Opening of Christmas in the Park 1. Chill Your Cheeks a. 361 participants 2. Kringle Karnival 3. Jingle Walk ii. Long lines through the Christmas lights iii. 395th Army Band, Santa Express, ice skating, food trucks iv. Your feedback on any of the Christmas in Yukon events is welcomed b. Mayor’s Essay Contest and Christmas Party for Kids a. Essay reading b. Student and teacher prizes c. Santa, the Grinch, Rudolph d. Student caroling, games, pictures with Santa c. Sounds of the Season a. 1071 tickets sold b. OKC Philharmonic featuring Canterbury Voices, Susan Powell (Miss America 1981), Mandy Jiran, and Vince Leseney d. Spirit League Christmas Party a. Over 100 attendees (average has been 25-30 the last couple of years) e. Free Throw Contest a. More than 50 participants f. Upcoming Special Events a. Daddy Daughter Dance – January 28 b. Chocolate Festival – February 4 c. Freedom Fest – July 3 and 4 3. Programs a. Passed out activity brochures i. List of Special Events included ii. Programs 1. Yukon’s Young Discovery Classes a. Will be expanding to include evening times starting in the summer 2. Life Skills for Teens a. Budgeting b. College scholarships/applications c. Housekeeping d. Resume Building 3. Painting with Mom a. 28 signed up currently 4. Dad, Donuts, and Cornhole 5. PE through the Ages a. 23 signed up currently 6. Spirit League a. Baseball, soccer, basketball, bowling, swimming, and kayaking b. Social events i. Christmas party, new events c. Music, arts, and crafts, etc. 4. Staffing Updates a. Athletics Coordinator i. Yahola Tiger ii. Previous Athletics Coordinator, Patrick Langley, is now our Special Programs Coordinator which allows us to focus more on Spirit League programs. b. DRC Positions i. Looking for cook, kitchen manager, and cleaning help. 5. Conclusion Ryan McClure: Big things are happening in parks and recreation from projects to events to new and existing programs; I’m excited to see what the future holds for parks and recreation here in Yukon VI. Open Discussion: - Tim Rhodes is impressed with the fresh ideas – keep it up. - Stephen Nelson – Excited about the disc golf, Freedom Trail Playground, and batting cages - Joe Baumann – impressed with the array of activities, and question if program can be included in water bill.
