Minutes of Meeting of Zionsville Trails Committee
November 12, 2012
Members present: Tim Casady, Bill Spitz, Lance Lantz, Paul Watson, Art Small, Bernie Paul, and Matt
Dickey
Meeting called to order at 6:00PM. In Evan’s absence, Art Small volunteered to take minutes.
Tim noted that because of Zionsville’s budget restraints for the coming year, funding for pathways for
2013 will be very tight – especially for new projects .
Bicycle Friendly Community Application – Bill Spitz
Bill is moving the application process forward. The application due in February. He is meeting regulary
with the Bicycling Advisory Sub-Committee (every other week).
Bill is working on the advocacy group, Bicycle Indiana, holding a seminar in February regarding the
League of American Cyclists Bicycle Friendly Community program. (Subsequent to the meeting, this one-
day seminar – to be run by the Bicycle Indiana Executive Director Nancy Tibbett – has been set for Town
Hall, on Thursday, February 7. All Pathways Committee members, as well as Town Council members,
Town staff members will be welcome and invited. Tim and Bill will work with Richard Stroup to invite
Lebanon officials or bicycle advocates.)
Tim met with Julie Johns-Cole, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, to discuss putting
Zionsville’s trails on their map of Zionsville attractions. She now has a quote (approx $7k) for
development of the map, and will be including it with her 2013 funding proposals.
The group then discussed the list of high-priority (“A” Bucket) future pathway projects as to status and
priority:
1. A-1 --Eagle Creek Trail-Still in talking stages with Stables to get wider easement.
2. A-2—Turkey Foot Road Trail –Still in limbo—no decisions as to whether trail should be on east
or west side of roadway. Tim will touch base with Councillor Steve Mundy.
3. A-3—Hawthorne Connecter to Town—Agreed upon that we could use share the road marking
of the roadway. Lance indicated that this may be an easy cost effective way to get bicycle traffic
from the rail trail to the center of town. Need to discuss and get approval from Safety Board.
Motion to have Paul, Tim and Phil shepherd thru putting share road markings on Hawthorne.
Motion passes.
4. A-4—Railtrail to Oak Street- group thought it should be reduced to “B” or “C” priority bucket.
5. A-5—Raintree to Elm-will be finished next year per Lance. Funded.
6. A-6—Bloorwood to Mulberry—Several years away-no money in budget
7. A-7—Templin Road to US 421—tied to land donation.
8. A-8—Lions Park to Elm Street Green—This pathway is a high priority but still need landowners
to allow easement. Will discuss in January 2013 to determine what may be the best way to
approach landowners.
9. A-9—Oak Street West—This is an important pathway but will be difficult because of cost. We all
need to start talking and lobbying about its importance.
Meeting-- Adjourned at 7:10PM.
Next meeting Monday, January 14, 2013 @ 6:00PM
