CITY OF ALBANY COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS MEETING MINUTES CITY HALL 24 EAGLE STREET, ALBANY, NY August 17, 2023 6:00pm Opening: The August 17, 2023 meeting was called to order at 6:07pm by Chair Aaron Moore. Present: Aaron Moore, Chair Tom Mueller, Vice Chair Richard Conti, Commissioner Valerie Alexander-Moseley, Commissioner Celia Evers, Commissioner Kate Shelly, Commissioner Rosie Love, Commissioner Jasmine A. Higgins, Chief Equity Officer, City of Albany, NY Raisi Mobele, Assistant Corporation Counsel, City of Albany, NY Absent: Natisha Alexander Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes: May meeting minutes approved as distributed. New Business: • CHR vacancy due to departure of Commissioner and Secretary to the Commission, Tom Richards. • Upcoming community events including the Albany County Land Trust Violence Prevention Programming in Arbor Hill and West Hill. Commissioner Alexander-Moseley shared a September 2nd Village Barbershop Back 2 School event. • CHR efforts to establish a resource guide to share with community members. The resource guide should include information regarding local human rights related services available in the City of Albany. • Discussed the annual schedule of City of Albany events and tabling at events to increase visibility and spread awareness about the Commission, it’s work, and responsibilities. • Sgt. Henry Johnson Award nomination period coming to a close this week – please help spread the word and nominate an individual who has dedicated himself or herself to serving the community. The Sgt. Henry Johnson award shall be presented at the 2023 City of Albany Jazz Festival. • CHR establishing sub-committees to divide and organize the work. The CHR has agreed upon three subcommittees which include: Community and Non-Profit Engagement, Investigations, and Communications and Social Media. Mission statement overviews have been drafted for each sub-committee. Each sub-committee shall have a minimum of three people responsible for drafting respective policies and procedures for operation, providing quarterly reports on activities and actions taken, and reporting back out to the entire Commission and community at monthly Commission meetings. o -Chair Moore expressed interest in serving on all three sub-committees o -Commissioner Shelly expressed interest in serving on the investigations sub- committee o Commissioner Alexander-Moseley expressed interest in serving on the investigations sub-committee The Commission voted to appoint Commissioner Kate Shelly to the role of Secretary to the Commission.
