MAYOR Terry Stoneburner COUNCIL MEMBERS Rocky Gillis, Mayor Pro Tem Raymond Martin Michael Bembas Helen Meldrum Corey Blair Jake Skarbek CITY OF ALGONAC REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING Tuesday, October 6, 2020 7:00 p.m. City Council Chambers, 805 St. Clair River Drive Algonac, MI 48001 Minutes Call to Order Mayor Stoneburner called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Roll Call Present: Bembas, Blair, Gillis, Martin, Meldrum, Skarbek, Stoneburner Absent: None Others: City Manager Denice Gerstenberg, City Clerk Sam Boelke, Fire Chief Joe Doan, Kathy Doan, Ed Carter, Amy Amiels, Dr. Megan Bradford, Bill Gratopp, Caryn VanderHeuvel, Michelle Nolan Moment of Silent Prayer Mayor Stoneburner called for a moment of silent prayer. Pledge of Allegiance Mayor Stoneburner led the Pledge of Allegiance. Approve Agenda Motion by Skarbek; supported by Bembas to approve agenda as presented. Motion carried. Presentations No presentations 10.6.2020 CC Minutes 1 Public Comment Michelle Nolan commented on blight violations at 825 Summer Street. City Manager’s Report City Manager Gerstenberg presented a brief report. Consent Agenda Motion by Martin; supported by Blair to approve regular meeting minutes of September 15, 2020 as presented. Motion carried. Unfinished Business None New Business To accept donation for Lions Field Trash Cans: $1,900 Motion by Blair; supported by Bembas to gratefully accept the donation of $1,900 for Lions Field trash cans from Amy Amiels, owner of Amiels Enterprises, and Dr. Megan Bradford, owner of Algonac Chiropractic Family Wellness Center and approve purchase of the trash cans from Belson Outdoors, whose address is 627 Amersale Drive, Naperville, IL 60593 in the amount of $1,796.24. Motion carried. Roll Call Ayes: Blair, Gillis, Martin, Meldrum, Skarbek, Stoneburner, Bembas Nays: None To approve MiDeal Salt Purchase: $9,150.50 Motion by Bembas; supported by Skarbek to approve purchase of road salt from Detroit Salt Company, whose address is 12841 Sanders Street, Detroit, MI 48217 at a cost of $9,150.50. Roll Call Ayes: Gillis, Martin, Meldrum, Skarbek, Stoneburner, Bembas, Blair Nays: None To approve Halloween Trick or Treat Hours Motion by Bembas; supported by Skarbek to approve Trick or Treating between 5–7 p.m. and closing Clay and Smith from Washington to Michigan and Michigan from Clay to Smith from 5 – 10 p.m. on Saturday October 31, 2020. 10.6.2020 CC Minutes 2 Accounts Payable Motion by Skarbek; supported by Bembas to approve accounts payable and payroll in the amount of $917, 146.82 as presented. Motion carried. Roll Call Ayes: Gillis, Martin, Meldrum, Skarbek, Stoneburner, Bembas, Blair Nays: None Items for Next Agenda • Fire Hazard Pay • MERS • Backflow preventers for the city • Hydrant repair • City Hall Front door repair Council Comment Gillis Thanks to Dr. Megan and Amy Amiels for the donation. Henry’s Club is having a fundraiser on Monday for the Rohn family. Scalici Pizza will be there and there will be raffles. Henry’s Club just purchased cement cornhole games for Riverfront park. Blair Thank you again to Amy Amiels and Dr. Megan Bradford. They are always here to support the needs of the city. Halloween in the Nac is Oct. 17th. It’s going to be a great event and I’m proud to be part of this city. Bembas Halloween in the Nac is October 17th. Thanks to Ed Carter, Amy Amiels and Dr. Megan who are all involved in the planning. Most of the businesses in town will be there sponsoring games for kids. The parade is at 12:30 and anything goes – golf carts, bikes, cars, on foot. Rocky Gillis is having the pallet maze again at Smith Recreation Park. Chief Doan will manage the duck race on the river. Tickets are $5 and that money goes to buy the candy we give to the kids. Martin Thank you to Amy Amiels and Dr. Megan Bradford for the donation. I coach high school tennis. This time of year, we, as adults, have to watch over the kids, make sure they do the right thing, help them make safe choices. As adults we have to do that. Skarbek Thanks to Amy and Dr. Megan. Get out and enjoy Halloween. Be safe and have a good time. Go Vote. Go to the polls, vote by mail, whatever works but VOTE. Stoneburner 10.6.2020 CC Minutes 3 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Get your mammogram. Make that appointment; get the process started. Thanks to Dr. Megan and Amy Amiels for the donation. They are always here they never hesitate to help when something is needed. I appreciate that. We appreciate that. They are always volunteering. When we’re out in public, or when we’re volunteering in our community, be mindful that our kids are watching. They’re watching what we’re doing all the time. Be a good example. I’m happy to be able to bring my grandkids to Halloween in the Nac and enjoy it as a gramma with them. Just received a lovely letter from Barbara Steele detailing her happiness with living in Algonac. Adjournment Motion by Blair; supported by Bembas to adjourn the meeting at 7:38 p.m. Motion carried.
