Grant Applications Review and Discussion All of the grant applications (see below) were reviewed for details on how the funds would be used, and if all the required documentation was received. Cherylyn provided the Board a legal point of view for each application submitted. In total, $1,495,364 was requested for PARC Grants this year. The estimated total PARC funds available is approximately $963,286 The Board expressed differing opinions regarding some of the applicant requests and after discussing each thoroughly, all were in agreement with the proposed allocation amounts listed below. American Fork Recreation and Parks  Art Dye Park 350,000.00  DUP Benches, Cans, and Trees 4,050.00  Picnic Tables, Trash Cans, and Trees 18,100.00  Playground for Meadow View Park 66,000.00 - Playgrounds - Robinson and Rotary 107,000.00  Rotary Park Pavilion Replacement 96,947.00  Swing Sets for Rotary and Pioneer Parks 10,000.00  Easton Park – Dog Park 38,000.00 American Fork Library and Friends of the Library  Book Fairy Project 4,700.00  Dictionaries for 3 Grade rd 2,250.00 Alpine Community Theater (ACT)  Joseph and Winter Show 35,000.00 Timpanogos Arts Foundation (TAF)  Instruments 35,000.00  Programming 295,000.00  Timpanogos Chorale Tour 47,888.00 Utah Metropolitan Ballet  Legend of Timpanogos 36,109.00   Nutcracker 30,000.00 Harrington Center  Sponsored Concert 10,130.00  Community Outreach 14,134  Design and Programming 31,195.00 American Chamber of Commerce  Summer Concert Series and Steel Days 70,000.00 Fox Hollow Golf Course  Pavilion/Concert Stage 40,000.00 The following explain the reasoning for these recommendations: ACT: Joseph and Winter Show $35,000.00 Based in American Fork, Act is a well-organized company that provides excellent productions for our community. They plan to present a large-scale production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as well as a winter show (yet to be determined). These productions will be great assets for our community. Harrington Center for the Arts: Sponsored Concert $10,130.00 The Harrington Center for the Arts has made great progress in their organization and planning. This concert provides a wonderful concert for the families of our community as well as enhanced awareness of the Harrington Center for the Arts, their mission, and their goals. Friends of American Fork Library: Book Fairy Project $4,500.00 Literacy enhances arts, culture, and community. The Book Fairy Project has proven to encourage students to enjoy reading and learning and to pursue an understanding of literary arts. This project provides a book each month of the school year for every first grade student. Friends of American Fork Library: Dictionaries for 3rd Grades $2,250.00 Once again, literacy enhances arts, culture, and community. The Dictionary Project encourages students to enjoy reading and learning and to gain an excitement for learning. This project provides a dictionary for every third grade student. Daughters of the Utah Pioneers: Benches, Cans, and Trees $4,050.00 The addition of benches, garbage cans, and trees will make the experience at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum more enjoyable. This will provide a comfortable place for community presentations by the museum curators. Art Dye Park $350,000.00 American Fork has been working to complete Art Dye Park for many years, and the vision for the park is excellent. The current plan, when completed, will make this an acclaimed gathering place for athletics, entertainment, and recreation. Ongoing funding for this multi-use park is a worthy use of PARC tax funds. Parks and Recreation: Park Benches Trash Cans and Trees $18,100.00 Park benches, trash cans, and trees will provide comfortable places for people to sit, rest, watch children play, and enjoy the beauty of nature in a variety of places throughout the community. The cost is minimal to provide a significant benefit. Parks and Recreation: Meadow View Park Playground $66,000.00 As a complement to last year’s improvements, this playground will make Meadow View Park a more useable park for families to enjoy. Parks and Recreation: Rotary Park Pavilion Replacement $96,947.00 The current pavilion at Rotary Park is tired and worn. The replacement of this pavilion will provide a revitalized place for family and community gathering. It will be a beautiful enhancement to the park. Timpanogos Arts Foundation Programming $295,000.00 The Timpanogos Arts Foundation has many worthwhile and educational programs currently in place, and they have a vision of growth and improvement. To achieve this, they need funding. American Fork is known for many of its arts programs, and community members want to see these programs continue to grow. Also, the recent adjustments by the city for rentals will increase the needed funding for TAF. In the future, the Board would like to see a greater degree of financial independence demonstrated through grants, fund-raising, etc. Timpanogos Arts Foundation: Instruments $36,109.00 The American Fork Symphony and Wasatch Winds were able to purchase some instruments for rehearsals and performances last year. This allows them to rehearse and schedule performances without having to worry about scheduling around and borrowing from school programs. There are, however, additional instruments needed to create the full symphonic sound necessary to perform first-rate musical presentations. Though this is not the full amount requested, it will help them begin to achieve their goals. Utah Metropolitan Ballet: Legend of Timpanogos $36,109.00 The story of this ballet is an inherent cultural element of our community since we reside at the base of Mount Timpanogos. Utah History is taught in fourth and seventh grades; therefore, this experience will make history come alive for these students in our community. For our fourth grade students to have the opportunity to study this legend and then to see the ballet in an outdoor setting at the base of the mountain will be a memorable experience for them and will help them understand the culture of our area. In addition, the seventh grade students at American Fork Junior High will have a Legend of Timpanogos assembly to enhance their studies. Requests Not Funded American Fork Chamber of Commerce: Summer Concert Series, Steel Days Show, Concert Stage The mission of this organization relates to uniting and advancing the success of business in American Fork. They do not qualify as a cultural organization. Fox Hollow: Pavilion/Concert Stage The Board was of the opinion that the primary beneficiary of this particular amenity would be corporate, golf-related events. Harrington Center for the Arts: Community Outreach There are legal concerns regarding whether this funding is for ongoing operating expenditures. Parks and Recreation: Playground Replacement for Robinson and Rotary Parks Though these are worthy projects, there is not enough funding for everything. Therefore, this can be applied for during another year. Parks and Recreation: Easton Dog Park Once again, though this is a worthy project, the projects funded seem to be higher priorities. Timpanogos Arts Foundation: Timpanogos Chorale National Tour Though this would be an exciting experience for a few American Fork residents, the experience would affect very few community members. Harrington Center for the Arts: Design and Programming This request is a facility cost, and can only be applied for by publicly-owned facilities. Utah Metropolitan Ballet: The Nutcracker Though this would be a great experience for our first grade students, the Legend of Timpanogos experience is the more powerful of the two in regards to art and culture. There is not enough money to fund both. Other Business Laurel will prepare narrative memo and email to the Board the recommendations for their review and comment, prior to sending to the Council.
