Following the completion of all agenda items, a discussion ensued about other business.
A clean-up of Avon Lake was discussed. Brightwaters has used a “Weed Do” device to remove parrot
feather and we will explore it, if it is DEC approved. Trash cans with covers may help, said Mayor Siry.
Mayor Smith suggested holding a contest in the schools to have trash cans painted and decorated.
Mayor Siry reported that the contract for new smart parking meters for the LIRR parking lot is close to
being signed.
Residents of Village by the Bay are parking in Municipal Parking Lot #18 under the LIRR without
permits. The trustees agreed to contact the property owner to address the overflow parking situation.
Mayor Siry also said that based on the number of cars in the complex, the parking ratio for any future
projects should be adjusted higher.
The formation of a Historical Preservation Commission was also addressed, including reporting structure
as well as the Trustees’ preference for incentivizing property owners to restore and preserve their
property. The Town of Southold and Village of Babylon have historical preservation commissions and
may be good models for our initiative.
Public Comments
Joan Donnison, 175 S. Ketcham Ave., asked the Board to move quickly on establishing an Historical
Preservation Commission so we do not lose significant historical structures.
Diane Mellish, 22 S. Ketcham Ave., Amityville, spoke of a parking problem on South Ketcham Avenue
resulting from patrons of Brownstones parking along both sides of the street, sometimes blocking
driveways. Deliveries continue to be a nuisance as well, she said.
Joan Donnison, 175 S. Ketcham Ave., Amityville, advised the Board that a commercial Towing Truck
(Bangs) has been parking overnight at a home on Ketcham Avenue, which is against the Code.
She also raised concern about a recent pedestrian fatality on Broadway at Walgreens (Mill St./north of
Sterling Pl.), saying something needs to be done to make the road safer. Mayor Siry advised that there is a
traffic study going on and this will be addressed. Bay Village Civic Association is willing to help, she
said.
