Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes March 10, 2025 The Board of Trustees Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Dennis Siry, Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith; Trustee Michael O’Neill, Trustee Owen Brooks, Jr, Trustee Roger Smith MEMBERS ABSENT: Village Attorney Bruce Kennedy ALSO PRESENT: Chief Bryan Burton AFD 3rd Assistant Chief Thomas Langford DPW Superintendent Bruce Hopper Building Inspector Michael Breitweg Clerk/Treasurer Catherine Murdock Mayor’s Assistant Wendy O’Neill Mayor Siry welcomed everyone to the Board of Trustees Meeting and asked Chief Byran Burton to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Siry asked Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith for the upcoming events, which included: March 24th is the Library budget review and April 8th; is the Library budget vote. There is an AFD Blood Drive, April 14th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and the Village Election Day, is March 18th, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mayor Siry added that on Friday, March 14th, at 10 a.m. the Village Tax Sale takes place in the Village Court Room. The Mayor shared that the Village has earned a Tree City USA designation for the 37th year, thanking the Parks Commission, DPW and Superintendent Bruce Hopper for the accolade. He then paid tribute to Carolyn and Al James, Owners/Publishers of the Amityville Record and read a proclamation acknowledging their 32 years of publication and ownership. He applauded them for their journalistic integrity and for documenting the history of the Village. The paper was founded in 1904 and they continued it with excellence over the years, he added. The Board then presented an engraved bench which will be installed behind 8 Greene Ave. – site of the original Amityville Record office. The Village Trustees also took turns congratulating them, followed by a round of applause. Carolyn James expressed their gratitude to the Village for all their interactions over the years. She recalled how the Record’s founder, Charles Delano would take the train into New York City to have the paper printed in the evenings and return home late at night, ready to distribute it the next day. The Mayor then asked the Trustees to provide Committee Reports: Court Report (January 2025) – Trustee Roger Smith 1 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes March 10, 2025 DPW Report (March 2025) – Trustee O’Neill Mayor Siry announced that DPW Superintendent Bruce Hopper will be awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Suffolk County Village Officials Association on April 16th. Mayor Siry thanked him for 37 years of service to the Village DPW and for all he does. He received a round of applause. 2 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes March 10, 2025 APD (February 2025) (Trustee Brooks) FEBRUARY 1 to FEBRUARY 28th, 2025 APD Chief Burton noted that it was a busy week with Mesita opening. Tree Surgery Inc. for tree removal 112 Bryan Ave. in the amount of $3,000.00 (A0-7110-240) MOTION TO APPROVE was made by Trustee O’Neill seconded by Trustee Roger Smith Vote on Motion: Mayor Dennis Siry aye Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith aye Trustee Michael O’Neill aye Trustee Owen Brooks aye Trustee Roger Smith aye Motion Carried: 5 ayes 0 nays 0 abstain Resolutions Approve Resolution 25-03-10-01 authorizing Town of Babylon Fire Inspectors to issue appearance tickets in the Village of Amityville 8 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes March 10, 2025 RESOLUTION 25-03-10-01 Resolution authorizing Town of Babylon Fire Inspectors to issue appearance tickets in the Village of Amityville Whereas it is important for the health, safety and welfare of village residents that properties within the village comply with the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, and Whereas to enforce such Code, the Mayor is authorized to appoint fire inspectors for such purpose, and Whereas the Village of Amityville has an Inter-Municipal Agreement with the Town of Babylon to provide qualified fire inspectors to perform fire inspections within the Village, as requested, and Whereas said fire inspectors need the authority to issue appearance tickets for violations of the Uniform Code to properly enforce said Code, and Whereas duly appointed inspectors are authorized to issue appearance tickets by §49-15 paragraph B of the Village Code NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS: 1) The Mayor be, and he hereby is authorized to appoint duly qualified fire inspectors provided by the Town of Babylon pursuant to an Inter-Municipal Agreement as part-time fire inspectors from the Village of Amityville to be compensated as provided in said Inter Municipal Agreement. 2) Said part-time fire inspectors shall have all the powers and duties set forth in §49-3 of the Code of the Village of Amityville. Together with the authority to issue appearance tickets for any violations of the Uniform Code pursuant to §49-15 B of the Village Code. 3) This Resolution shall be effective immediately. Ketcham Ave., of the Bay Village Civic Association said she is thrilled Mesita is open for business but there is a parking issue. She asked if an arrangement could be worked out with the school district during non-school hours. Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith replied that things are being worked on for parking. Mayor Siry advised that the Village is adjusting and working on solutions having now seen the business operating and the impact. She also asked if Fridays on the Greene will continue this year, to which Trustee Michael O’Neill responded “yes,’. He confirmed that the businesses are aware of the event and discussions are taking place.
