Page 9 of 15
Rain Garden/Bioretention:
Total Cost ($) = $ 3.80 × [sq ft impervious] + $ 0.44 × [sq ft pervious] – $ 372
Assumptions:
- 0.10 ac: 2000 sq ft impervious
2356 sq ft pervious
- 0.25 ac: 2400 sq ft impervious
8490 sq ft pervious
- 0.50 ac: 2800 sq ft impervious
18980 sq ft pervious
- Entire yard (pervious) and driveway/roof (impervious) contribute to runoa
- No up gradient area contributing to runoa
- No soil quality restoration has been performed
- Silt loam: percolation rate ~ 0.25 in/hr
- Existing yard slope 9:1 (11%)
- Basin side slope 3:1
- 12” ponding depth, 12” freeboard
- Amended soil: 75% sand, 15% topsoil, 10% compost
- Amended soil and plant plugs cover entire ponding area
Factors that would increase/decrease cost:
- Site configuration/slope (impacts length of subdrain needed, quantity and
complexity of excavation, area contributing to runoa)
- DIY activities by resident (i.e. spreading amended soil, mulching, planting)
- Soil quality restoration (reduces runoa coeaicient of pervious areas)

Empirical Cost Relationship:
→ Fit to formula: 𝑧 = 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶
z = Total Cost ($)
x = Impervious Area (sq ft)
y = Pervious Area (sq ft)
A, B, C = Constants ($ / sq ft)
→ 3 equations, 3 unknowns:
$ 8,275 = A [2000 sq ft] + B [2356 sq ft] + C
$ 12,520 = A [2400 sq ft] + B [8490 sq ft] + C
$ 18,700 = A [2800 sq ft] + B [18980 sq ft] + C
→ Result:
A = $ 3.80 / sq ft impervious
B = $ 0.44 / sq ft pervious
C = - $ 372
Total Cost ($) = $ 3.80 × [sq ft impervious] + $ 0.44 × [sq ft pervious] – $ 372
