Items Discussed:
Motion by Sally to approve minutes. Mark seconded. Kimberly and Madeline abstained.
Quorom was not met so motion was tabled for next meeting.
December holiday party will replace regular monthly meeting. Regular meeting date is
12/8, but final party date will be discussed and determined at a later date.
Staff Report:
o Reviewed public art master plan proposal. No vote required tonight, commission
will take time to review. The commission will need to vote to implement this plan
and will work with Todd to implement and solicit feedback from local artists.
Discussion around timeline (5-10 year plan) and expectations around goals and
specificity.
o Making Your Own Opportunities with Public Art - online course that will start in
2024. Promotion would begin Dec. 1 and applications will be accepted through
the beginning of the year. Applicants will go through a review process in order to
be admitted to the class.
o Projects report:
o Call for Poet Laureate closed on Friday, November 10th. We received seven
applications. The selection will be taking place this Thursday, November 16th.
Announcement will be made in January 2024. Bulk of programming will occur
during National Poetry Month in April.
o Many upcoming projects are in contracting stage right now. TSPLOST projects
will be presented in January and the commission will vote to determine which
projects are best suited for public art. The selections will then be submitted to
Mayor and Commission.
o Website - Commission reviewed website and made suggestions. Members can
send feedback to Tatiana through Monday, November 20th. Sally motioned to
soft launch the website as-is. Madeline seconded. All in favor.
o Lantern Parade - There will be 5 calls for artists (or groups) who will be awarded
a one-time payment. Parade is scheduled for Saturday, March 16th. Last year
there were 350-400 people and we expect closer to 1,000 in 2024.
Misc:
o Winter Wonderlights - Sculptures by Chris Taylor. Different setup than last year.
Disco nights after Christmas.
o Performing Arts Center - Friday night: Terrance Blanchard, Unsilent Night: a
Boombox Parade will be Saturday before Christmas (Dec 23)
o Athens Symphony - Christmas concert on Dec 9 & 10, free tickets but they sell
out quickly! Sale starts November 27 at 9am. Classic City Band Christmas
Concert 12/19 7:30 at PAC.
o Kimberly co-producing Shine concert on Sunday, November 26th at Morton
Theatre.
o Nuci's Space Athens Uncovered on Sunday, November 26th with local bands
playing throughout the day, starting at noon.
o Sweeny Todd opens this Thursday with shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
o Family Day at Lyndon House on Saturday and art openings coming up.
o Spotlight on the Arts month in November with many events
o Theme for Holiday Parade of Lights is An Artful Christmas. Thursday, December
7th. Grand Marshall is Harold Whittenberg. ACAC members interested in
participating in next year's parade with a float.
o Tatiana's show at the library is up until Dec 3.
o Mark Mobley's one man show will be at Flicker on Saturday, January 20th at
Flicker.
o Art show at the Chamber with Sheila Wraps Stones opens on Dec 6.
o Creative Placemaking conference will be in Atlanta March 5-8.
