No public comment made. • Kent Kilpatrick summarized Leisure Services’ role in the 19 days of Juneteenth activities during 2022. • Julita stated that a consensus was already made that they will not be doing 19 days of Juneteenth this year. Instead, the body will be leading towards one Juneteenth event. • Julita recommended that the body collaborates with whomever is leading Juneteenth this year. • While sharing a copy of last year’s 19 days of Juneteenth survey results, Cameron stated that the survey results show that the community wasn’t properly informed about the 19 days of Juneteenth. Cameron stated that people said that this was due to a lack of advertising. • Kent said that a lot of lessons were learned from the 2022 Juneteenth Collective. Kent said that the collective divided into subgroups, and the marketing subgroup didn’t live up to the expectation they initially had. • Trevor asked if there were other events going on during 19 days of Juneteenth in 2022, which Cameron and Kent confirmed was the case. She also stated she has all of the contact information for local churches. She’ll send out an email to churches and the neighborhood leaders asking about 2023 Juneteenth events. • Kent recommended that someone from the body reach out to Homer Wilson, head of the Hot Corner Festival, to inquire about possibly collaborating with Hot Corner. • Danielle asked about fireworks for Juneteenth. • Sanctioned by the government, Kent stated that fireworks aren’t possible to do for Juneteenth. This is because it would have to go through a bid-phase and an award-phase with a professional fireworks company. Kent says the cost of a fireworks show is $2,000 per- minute. • Kent said that performers performed last year without signing a final contract, which he says will not happen again. • Danielle asked how much the budget is this year. Information pulled from Mayor and Commission, Kent said that a budget of $20,000 is available for Juneteenth. • Julita stated that HRC member Cameron Jay Harrelson suggested how this subcommittee can collaborate with Pride. • Kent pitched the following event ideas to the Community Outreach subcommittee: Inclusion Office THE UNIFIED GOVERNMENT OF ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, GEORGIA P. Kent slightly remembers putting up a second flag pole. Both Niki and Kent said they ultimately don’t remember what flag was raised first. • Danielle asked Kent if Leisure Services had anything planned for 2023 Juneteenth. Kent said Leisure Services doesn’t have anything planned but will definitely support this subcommittee with planning. • Julita ended the conversation saying she will reach out to Homer Wilson, neighborhood leaders and church members. Danielle said she’ll reach out to Pride. • This subcommittee agreed to meet every two weeks. Their next meeting will be March 15th at 6 p.m. at ACC Police Department – 385 Fairview St. Athens, GA • Chair made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Danielle agreed.
