The Mayor and Commission of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia met
this date in a special called session. Present: Mayor Girtz, Commissioners Link, Taylor, Wright, Fisher,
Houle, Myers, and Thornton. Commissioner Davenport arrived at 11:59 a.m. Absent: Commissioners
Culpepper and Hamby
The purpose of the meeting was to consider a resolution that the portion of Foundry Street
between East Dougherty Street and East Broad Street be temporarily designated as Love Shack Lane in
honor of the B-52s’ contribution to the Athens music industry; and any other item in proper order.
Public Input
There was none.
New Business – Consider suspension of Rules
A motion was made by Commissioner Thornton, seconded by Commissioner Myers, to suspend
Rules of Commission for consideration of one item of new business. The motion passed by unanimous
vote.
A motion was made by Commissioner Wright, seconded by Commissioner Link, to adopt the
following resolution. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMISSION OF THE UNIFIED GOVERNMENT OF
ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY COMMISSION TO ERECT TWO STREET SIGNS IN HONOR OF THE B-
52S, DESIGNATING THAT THE PORTION OF FOUNDRY STREET BETWEEN EAST DOUGHERTY
STREET AND EAST BROAD STREET BE TEMPORARILY DESIGNATED AS LOVE SHACK LANE IN
HONOR OF THE B-52S’ CONTRIBUTION TO THE ATHENS MUSIC INDUSTRY; AND FOR OTHER
LAWFUL PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, the B-52s are an American new wave band that formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976;
and
WHEREAS, the B-52s are recognized as the band that put Athens on the musical map and
paved the way for many other artists to find success; and
WHEREAS, the B-52s have been nominated for three Grammy Awards and are known worldwide
for groundbreaking and chart-topping hits like “Love Shack” and “Rock Lobster;” and
WHEREAS, the B-52s are scheduled to make history as the first artist to perform at the brand
new Classic Center Arena on Saturday, December 14, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the B-52s outstanding contributions to the music industry, particularly in Athens,
Georgia, and their nearly forty year career constitute exceptional circumstances that justify erecting signs
on Foundry Street, designating that portion of Foundry Street between East Dougherty Street and East
Broad Street as Love Shack Lane; and
WHEREAS, the Classic Center Authority has generously agreed to cover the costs of
manufacturing and erecting said signs in consultation with Unified Government Staff (“Staff”) following
Staff’s review and approval of the design for the signs;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Mayor and Commission hereby resolves as follows;
SECTION 1.
The Mayor and Commission direct that Staff erect two signs provided by the Classic Center
Authority, the design for said signs having been reviewed and approved in advance by Staff, which shall
read as follows: “Love Shack Lane”, on Foundry Street at both the intersection at East Dougherty Street
and the intersection at East Broad Street beginning no later than December 13, 2024, and ending on
December 15, 2024.
SECTION 2.
The Mayor and Commission declare that the portion of Foundry Street beginning at East
Dougherty Street and ending at East Broad Street, is dedicated as “Love Shack Lane”.
SECTION 3.
In the event that scrivener’s errors shall be discovered in this Resolution after the adoption
hereof, the Commission hereby authorizes and directs that each such scrivener’s error shall be corrected
in all multiple counterparts of this Resolution.
SECTION 4.
This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its approval by the Mayor or upon its
adoption into law without such approval.
A motion was made by Commissioner Thornton, seconded by Commissioner Taylor, to adjourn
the meeting. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
The meeting adjourned at 12:05 p.m.
