CALL TO ORDER:
Mr. Mike Troutman, Chairperson called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

Mr. Mike Troutman, Chairperson noted and welcomed the (3) new Historic District members; Ms.
Kaytee Faris, Mr. Jim Hopkins and Mr. Bruce Phillips.
APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS MINUTES:
MOTION MADE BY MR. ERIC GREENE TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR
THE FEBRUARY 10, 2014 HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION MEETING,
SECONDED BY MR. DAN BUSCHER.
ALL IN FAVOR; NONE OPPOSED; MINUTES APPROVED

OLD BUSINESS: None
NEW BUSINESS:
A) 63 Wood Street & 428 Champion Street - (Request from Historic Adventist Village, Mr.
Don W. Scherencel, Historic Adventist Director, 47 Wood St., Battle Creek, MI, requesting a
Certificate of Appropriateness to install new fencing.)
Mr. Don W. Scherencel, Historic Adventist Director, stated he was here today on behalf of the
Historic Adventist Village, requesting to install new fencing on the north side for properties at 63
Wood Street and 428 Champion Street which lies within the Historic Adventist Village.

Mr. Eric Greene asked what the total footage of fencing was to be installed. Mr. Scherencel stated
it was on the west side of Wood St. is approximately 125 ft.; east side of Wood St. 125 ft.; and 185
ft. on the north side of Champion Street.
Mr. Eric Greene asked if it was decorative fencing. Mr. Scherencel stated, yes.
Mr. Eric Greene noted in the past there had been some issues with Wood Street and asked if the
fencing could cause any problem. Mr. Scherencel stated no, there should not be any issues.
Mr. Bruce Phillips asked if this was Mr. White properties and if the new fencing would be
maintenance free. Mr. Scherencel stated, fencing was wood and would require maintenance, but
that he is very much aware of the fencing needing to be historically correct.
Ms. Kaytee Faris asked if the boardwalk was to be maintained. Mr. Scherencel stated they were
not to be installing a boardwalk; they would only be installing fencing.
With no others wishing to speak, Chairperson, Mr. Troutman asked commissioners for any
action to be taken.
MOTION WAS MADE BY MR. ERIC GREENE TO APPROVE THE REQUEST
FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS TO ALLOW NEW FENCING
BASED ON THE STANDARDS OUTLINED IN CHAPTER 1470.09 NOTED IN
THE STAFF REPORT FOR PROPERTIES LOCATED AT 63 WOOD STREET
AND 428 CHAMPION STREET; SECONDED BY MR. BRUCE PHILLIPS.

Mr. Eric Greene welcomed the new members to the Historic District Commission.
