-POST/FRANKLIN NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COUNCIL- Thursday Sep 6, 2018 Chair James Moreno called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. at CA Board Room. Attendance: Members Present: James Moreno, Kjersten Priddy, Cindy Fritz, Yvonne Powell, Linda Carmona and Pat Shellenberger (via phone). Members Excused: Jack Childs, Katie Hubbard and La Mar Mingle Guest and Visitors: Tommy Rivera and Kelly Dillman - BCPD, Tommy Engels - BC Code, Commissioner Lynn Ward-Gray, Fay Washington and Deborah L. Evans – BCPS Additions and Deletions to the Agenda: None Approval of Minutes: No quorum, June Minutes will have to be approved in Oct. Correspondence and Announcements: Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church is hosting “Celebrating The Gift In You Music Workshops”, Friday Sep 14/15 from 9-3. Fundraiser for SSG Michael A. Dickerson, II – Rock the Lake for Veterans, Friday Sep 14 from 7-11 pm Calhoun County Rental Housing Round Table will be taking place at the Salvation Army Gym on Thu Sep 27th. This informative night will have two events. Landlords from 5-6 and tenants from 6-7. For more info. Call 269-965-3951. Habitat for Humanity fundraiser ‘Habi Hour’ takes place Sep 18 on the 16th flr of McCamly Plaza Hotel. Begins at 5:01 and is $25. Call 269-966-2502 for more info. New Level Sports opening day for the new field is Sep 8. All day activities will begin at 9:00 am. Michelle Kappen of Chemical Bank will hosting a Housing Education Workshop at the First Pentecostal Church on Sep 8 from 10 am to 12 noon. Calhoun County Hazardous Waste Collection will be Sep 8 from 10-12 at the Marshall Green St location. Other clean-ups will be the City of Battle Creek Fall Clean-up were residents may place junk at the curb with their regular pick on the week of Sep 17th. Oct 6 is the Clean The River – organization takes place at Bailey Park. Oct 8 at the Dept of Public Works – Battle Creek Kendall location. They will be accepting tires from 4-7 on a first come first serve. When trailer is full it’s done. Police: Officer Rivera thanked the community for its new Police Station, with that he reported with the move he was unable to get the police stats. When we receive them we will pass on the members. He reported that on the crime side it has been good with a few bad mixed in, but overall it was positive. He asked about the No Truck route signs – it was reported that they are up. He will check to make sure it was done and get back to us. Tree trimming is taking place throughout the neighborhood and commented on how it has opened up area. A few of the members had negative and positive comments on the tree trimming. Officer Rivera reported that he will be gone to Italy for the Military and this could be his last meeting. If so, the council will surely miss him and his go to approach to getting things done. Kelly Dillman reported that the Police Department is kicking of their Police Athletic League (PAL). On the Byrne Grant side of things “Be Safe Battle Creek” project meetings will take place the 4th Thursday of the month at the Police Station Community Rm. A lite dinner from 5:30-6:00 pm with the meeting starting at 6 until 8. If anyone is interested in a tour call/text Kelly at 269-832-4597. He reported that 117 Main St. has been demoed. Nothing else to add. Tommy had an easy night. Beautiful Battle Creek Award: None If you see a property that you feel deserves a BBC Award you may nominate that property; all that is required is the address. The council will then vote and the address is submitted to City Neighborhood Planning Office, who then proceed with the issuing of the Award. Note – once we submit the addresses the City takes control of the process and we have no say when an address will be awarded. If any member should have a question regarding an address that was submitted they need only ask and the inquiry will be made to the City and the outcome will be documented in the minutes. Membership: None. Guest were reminded if they are interested in joining council to let Chair or Vice Chair know and we will get a motion to add them to the membership. Commission Comments: Lynn reported that Keeping You Informed is airing a virtual tour of the new police station and October’s agenda will be Can I Be a Witness. Sherry Sofia was selected as Vice Mayor. Brian Struvidant was hired as the new Fire Chief. Jim Lance was appointed as Ward 5 Commissioner. The Economic development is in abundance around Battle Creek with a lot of presence everywhere. City Manager Review committee is set. Ethic Committee rules was set. Received notification that we are clear at the Verona Field with no PFOS/PFAS. A vote of 5/4 for resolution in favor gerrymandering initiative taking place on the ballot this fall. Battle Creek Public Schools: Deborah Evans of BCPs reported the following: It is year 2 of the 5 year transformation. They are working on attendance as it is currently at 50-75 percent in low attendance. Healthy Connections for staff to connect with parents/students. The BCPD is partnering with BCPS when a student has been affected by a crime. BCPS will be opening Fremont School as a World Language School. The McQuiston Center will be opening to the middle school 6/7/8 graders. Career Pathways is an opportunity for partnerships with the community. There is a HERO program which is a way for students to get and give recognition. Old Business: Rev. Kjersten Priddy reported on the Post Franklin Neighborhood Clean Up for September 22 from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. The location is the Post Consumers Brands – corner of Marjorie and Cliff Streets. They will be accepting trash, mattresses, tires, unusable clothing and document shredding. They will not be accepting Liquids, Yard Waste or Freon. The Charitable Union and Habitat for Humanity will be on site. There will be venders along with activities for kids and adults. A free lunch of Hot Dogs/Chips and water will be available. The Post Balloon Club will be selling Post Cereal for $1.50. New Business: Kay Washington spoke to the council on support of her Home Day Care and a need to a special use permit. The location is on Hannah. The council was in support of this initiative but was unable to vote or send letter of support to the Planning Commission as we did not have a quorum. Members were reminded that they could attend the Planning Commission and voice their support as neighbors. Members Comments: James and the council thanked Officer Rivera for his hard work in the Post Franklin area. He will be missed, but we wish him the best. If he leaves. Cindy suggested that we hold one of our winter meetings at the new Community Room at the new Police Station. Public Comments: Lynn expressed that she has tickets for the Habi Hour and for the Alumni Bearcats.
