Meeting Notes ~ May 8, 2012 ~ Neighborhoods, Inc.
1. Call to Order & Welcome: Meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by L. Gray, secretary.
2. Attendance-Members present: Jeffrey Dinkins, Scott Hutchings-FHC, Lynn Ward Gray,
Samuel Gray, Kitty Hillian, Steve Lee, Keith McDonald, Bill Phillips-NIBC and Dorothy Young
Members Excused Absence: Sheryl McDonald and Betty Settles City Staff: Officer Chad
Francisco, Guest: John Hennink, Judi Jones, Mark Jones, Geraldine King and Karen Lynn Todd.
3. Approval of Previous Minutes: Approval of March 13, 2012 meeting minutes & April 9,
2012 meeting notes was moved by K. Hillian, seconded by L. Gray. Motion carried.
4. Correspondence (sent/received) & Announcements: None.
5. City Staff/Committee/Commission/BCPS Reports: No reports were given, our priority was
setting an action plan for our 2012 goals. However, we did have one guest who expressed an
interest in NPC 2 membership. Moved by NIBC-B. Phillips, seconded by J. Dinkins to add
Judith “Judi” Jones, 240 Irving Park Drive, Battle Creek, MI 49037 to NPC2 membership.
Motion carried.
6. Creating an Action Plan for 2012 Goals: Discussed at length how to engage residents over
the next 3 months. We used K. McDonald’s 12-quandrant map to best divide up our canvas
efforts. Group settled on a couple community meetings that would be used to sign up block
champions. Many dates were proposed. It was moved by L. Gray and seconded by FHC-S.
Hutchings to host the community meetings during the June and August NPC2 meetings. In
addition, NPC2 members will canvas assigned quadrants of NPC2 to encourage participation the
week prior to each community meeting. Motion carried. 7-Yes, 1-Abstain. Food will be
provided. L. Gray will work with B. Phillips to create a marketing strategy (shopper insert, door
hangers, flyers) to get the word out about the meetings.
7. Public Comments/Member Comments: None
• J. Dinkins stated dumping at the corner lot of Wood & Roseneath is still a major problem.
• J. Jones provided information about Citizen’s Police Academy.
• S. Gray gave an update on the Northside Dr. Memorial Project for Maye Dinkins & Louis
Martin. Barbeque will be Sunday, May 20, 1-5 p.m. at the corner of E. Northside Drive &
Irving Park Drive near garden with dedication at 3 p.m.
• B. Phillips clarified how the funds NIBC has set aside for NPC2’s use can be used. The
chair and vice chair will need to complete the paperwork.
• L. Gray announced upcoming lunch n learn health presentation, Sugar-LESS, Thursday,
June 7, 11 a.m. at Burnham Brook Community Center, RSVP to.
8. Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be a Community Meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 2012
at 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church-364 W. Van Buren St. Food will be served.
9. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. by S. Gray, Chair
