Monday, July 8th, 2024 Meeting Minutes NORTHCENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COUNCIL #2 Washington Heights – Hub of Hope, 153 N. Wood St. 1. Call to Order & Welcome: 6:03pm Pastor French calls to order. Some money for pastor French, New Level and Smith ad ministry as far as childhood and innovative village. . If you have a ballot, you add a couple names. Matt Spurr. Ron Sweet wants to be on committee g. Battle Creek Public Schools: None present. h. Landbank. None i. Grace Health none 7. Presentation: Annette Chapman: Working with Pastor John Boyd. Second Baptist. Violence intervention. Since 2019. Working with Chf Blocker. Program being run in Detroit. Hospital based violence intervention program. Through D live. Runs one of the programs. Very successful. Evidence based. Model across nation. Done in larger metro areas. Meeting victims of gun shot in hospital after trauma has occurred. Done by referral of doctor or nurse. Wood St. incarcerated and changed their life and have credibility to talk to people. Looked at gun crime in community when doing master planning, hired consultant that compared us with 12 others and ours were the highest. A lot of them are African American male 14-24 years old. Talk to people in program. Whole idea is to work with people and mentorship. Goals for life and provide resources. Scholarships, employment. Work with partnerships to help out. Covid impacted program and model. Changed model to work with young people, high school age. Referred by teacher. Because under age get permission from parent. Have transitional house for victims. Work with church so have home to stay. Recently formulated gun action violence group. A lot mothers who have lost loved ones, been meeting. Trying to get presenters. Some training going on. Adverse childhood training. Gun violence Michigan. Partnered. Recently passed 4 different laws protecting people against guns. One of which is safe storage. Extreme risk protection order. See somebody acting inappropriately and around guys, can petition to court to get protection. Universal background check for everyone who wants to purchase a gun. Talking to organizations. Working with chief of police. Police can do so much, but community really needs to help. Pastor French asked Annette to come and how we can partner together. Discussion on how community can help. group that gets together once a month. Look at data and come up with model and work together. Chf Bagley very familiar with model in Kzoo. But has a larger community component. Community advising group. If a person is doing a lot of bad things, will use advisory council-- we are watching you. Very successful model. Hoping they would seek input from model and what felt comfortable with. Out of those models. Lets say model used in kzoo. Get community sit on advisory board. Would be call to action. Seven different churches represented and mothers. Usually, the second Thursday of month at 6pm at Second Baptist. But may not meet this Thursday this week. Next will be August 8th. Discussion. Block parties? Rolling parties. Move from area to area, 50-100 cars. Happening in kzoo. Usually 6-7 friends. Police know. Have to have evidence to prosecute. Nobody wants to snitch, unless we find evidence. Will be on street. That is why need community. Need older folks for people follow. Trying to reach young people. Wood St. 9. New Business. none 10. Public Comments/Member Comments: Angela: Discussion on load loud music from cars. Why is one person allowed to do that for 6 years. Music so loud rattles cameras. Shut this guy down. Neighbor has to replace window. This guy went from 8pm – 430am. Gentry: black and white patrol. They turn music down. White Taho to another vehicle. Keep calling dispatch. Gentry will pay attention to it. Gentry and O’Bryant. Greenwood, bowen and parkway. Pastor French. Community carnival 12-4pm here. Looking forward Grace Health: Open and willing to host meetings, have tons of room. If anyone interested. Water snacks. 11.
