Urbandale Neighborhood Planning Council #5 Council Minutes – September 10, 2012 Meeting at Christ United Methodist Church 65 North Bedford Road Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:03 PM by Robert Whitfield, chair. Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Chair; Dale Stratton; Nate Zanotti; Sara Schmanske; David Moore; Carl Brockman; Fred Bachman; Stan Beckwith; Barbara Beckwith; Walter McIlroy; Rebecca Runyon; Dr. Linda Hicks; Mary Lou Ramon; Dennis McKinley; Deborah L. Gregory A moment of silence was observed in memory of 9/11 Previous Minutes: August 2012 minutes were approved by voice vote. Correspondence: None Police Report: None Guest Speaker: Dr. Linda Hicks, Superintendent of Battle Creek Public Schools discussed helping kids to be successful by educating the whole child. The district supports a college going culture with programs such as S.T.E.M., Reach and the 9th grade academy. Dr. Hicks mentioned the timely receipt of MEAP testing data would assist in the implementation of necessary changes to achieve success. Dr. Hicks also reviewed photos of the current construction at the Math and Science Center and Franklin elementary. Request was made for the email addresses of the Superintendent of Public Instruction-Mike Flannigan. flanniganm@michigan.gov; & Governor Rick Snyder Rick.Snyder@michigan.gov. Commissioner’s Report: Mary Lou Ramon discussed two upcoming workshops. Subjects for discussion will be the animal ordinances of mandatory sterilization as well as discussing procedure followed for the drinking and driving incident of a Battle Creek Police officer. School Report: Deborah Gregory discussed the successful completion of the audit as well as the upcoming millage election in November. Code Report: Dennis McKinley updated the group on the properties inquired about at the 8/13/2012 meeting. In addition, excessive speeding was discussed and inquiries were made as to who to contact to obtain assistance with this issue. If you experience speeding or reckless driving, contact Sgt. Troy Gilleylen at 269-966-3302 for assistance and follow-up. Membership: Carl Brockman reported Darlene and Mason Mayo have excused absences. Beautiful Battle Creek Award: The award went to 77 Eldridge as reported by Dale Stratton. Old Business: Chair Robert Whitfield proposed the removal from the roster the following members who no longer attend meetings or notify the council of their absences. Proposed removals are: Paul and Jill Saytar; Marilyn Roberts; Jeff and Jennifer Knapper. Motions were made and approved by the council to remove the above from the roster. New Business: Fred Bachman discussed the Exchange of Battle Creek and Pennfield selling toothbrushes for the generation of dental work funding for underprivileged youth. Nominating Committee: Nate Zanotti – Nominations will take place at the October meeting. Adjournment: Chair Whitfield adjourned the meeting at 8:12 PM Respectively submitted by: Deborah L. Gregory
