Council Minutes – November 11, 2013
Meeting at Christ United Methodist Church
65 North Bedford Road
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Robert Whitfield, chair.
Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Chair; David Moore; Dale Stratton; Deborah Gregory; Mary Lou
Ramon; Carl Brockman; Fred Bachman; Deborah Owens; Sara Schmanske; Joe Britvec; Hal
Longman; Officer Trevor Hoard; Dennis McKinley; Barb Barnes
Previous Minutes: October 2013 minutes were approved by voice vote.
Correspondence: N/A
Police Report: Officer Trevor Hoard spoke briefly that he would be attending the meetings over the
next couple months.
Guest Speaker: Barb Barnes from Burnham Brook presented on Medicare fraud. Ms. Barnes
discussed real life cases of fraud in Michigan by both businesses and individuals. Her three steps to
prevent fraud are Protect, Detect and Report. She also fielded questions from the council.
Commissioner’s Report: Deb Owens was introduced as our newly elected commissioner for Ward 1.
Special thanks were given to Mary Lou Ramon for her service. Ms. Ramon also informed the council
on pending discussions of food trucks ordinances in downtown Battle Creek.
School Report: Deborah Gregory discussed the Board of Education meeting on Monday November
18, 2013 at the new Math & Science Center location.
Code Report: Dennis McKinley handed out a written report and fielded questions from the council.
Membership: Darlene & Mason Mayo, Stan & Barbara Beckwith, Rebecca Runyon, Kathy Antaya &
Patricia Graw had excused absences.
Beautiful Battle Creek Award: 45 West Spaulding as reported by Dale Stratton
Old Business: N/A
New Business: Fred Bachman was appointed to assist Deb Owens with the presentation committee.
Public Comment: Hal Longman informed the group that on 12/09/2013 the Burnham Brook will host
a Calhoun County Tea Party gathering.
Adjournment: Chair Whitfield adjourned the meeting at 7:53 PM
