URBANDALE NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COUNCIL
Minutes from June 11, 2018
1. Call to order and Welcome: Chairperson Robert Whitfield called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.
2. Attendance: Acting Secretary Rebecca Pierce, Chairman Robert Whitfield, Roger Ballard, David
Moore, Terry Lancaster, Johnny Vick, Patricia Graw, Sara Schmanske, Curtis Roberts, Freeman Thomas,
Kathy Antaya, Kristin Blood.
City Staff: Officer N. Hopkins, Officer E. Lanphar, Eric Campbell-city of Battle Creek and Dennis McKinley-
city of Battle Creek
Guests present: Megan Beronja, Judy McCormick who showed interested in becoming members, and
Bernadette Llewellyn
Excused: Harold Longman, Fred Bachman, John Griffin, Catherine LaValley, Wayne and Nancy Hoard.
3. Announcements: None
4. Additions or Deletions to the Agenda
5. Approval of Previous Minutes: Roger Ballard made a motion to accept May's minutes as written,
Freeman Thomas 2nd the motion, and the motion was passed by voice vote of the membership.
6. Police report: Officer Hopkins gave police report. Said the police have had a busy month in Urbandale.
A member express their concern over the usage of fireworks in Fell Park.
7. Guest Speaker: Eric Campbell, Civil Engineer for the city of Battle Creek. Spoke about milling and
resurfacing some residential streets in our area. Member voiced concerns about a spot on M37 needing
to be fixed, also concern for the man hole covers on M37.
8. Committee Reports: None
School: None
Code: Dennis McKinley gave us code report. He told us if we have a concern about tall grass and weeds,
we could contact Cheri Cunningham, 966-3387.Also, if residents could prove a need for help with
exterior paint, Jason Francisco would be the person to talk to from the city.
Beautification: 136 Althea Ave
9. Old Business: Request for a $1,720.00 grant will be submitted for Fall Fest. Chairman Robert
Whitfield asked the heads of the committees to retweek their budgets for sanitation, games, prizes, etc.
10. New Business: None
11. Public Comment: None
12. Member Comment: Kathy Antaya shared that there is a vegetable stand in front of Leila Arboretum
on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 10am to 6pm, please stop by. Also, Juneteenth is scheduled for Friday
June 15 with a game and a movie, and Saturday June 16 with games and activities at Claud Evans Park.
13. Next meeting is July 9, 2018. 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Brenda Hunt from the Foundation.
14. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned 7:49 p.m.
