Members Present : Comm. Helmboldt, Tiffany Welsh, Comm. Faris, Kathy Antaya, Kurt Tribbett, Michael
Myszka, Susan Anderson
Members Absent : Sarah Kelly, Christine Kosmowski, Comm. Flores
Others : Alicia Sackett, Deputy City Clerk; Ernesto Reyes, Assistant City Manager, Ember Grames, Denso Mfg.
Call to Order : Comm. Helmbolt called the meeting to order at 4:08 PM, noting a quorum was present.
Public Comment : There were none.
Approval of Minutes : A motion was made by Comm. Faris and supported by Kathy Antaya to approve the
minutes from June 1, 2016. All yes, none opposed. Minutes approved.
Additions or Deletions to the Agenda : There were none.
Member Updates/Reports:
City Energy Efficiency :
Kurt Tribbett stated we are continuing to develop the secondary treatment facility plans, looking to bid in
February with a spring build date. We are looking at a 20-40 % energy savings. We went through 4-6 weeks
when the SCADA was not working properly this has now been updated and is working better.
Environmental Programs Update:
Tiffany Welsh shared that we are continuing until 8/21 the rain barrel sale which is running in conjunction with
the are Rain Barrel Road Show Art Competition.
Ms. Welsh shared the City received the Silver Award for the Green Communities Challenge, the criteria changed
making it more difficult to achieve gold which we will strive for next year.
Comm. Helmboldt stated that this year only a few communities received Gold due to the new criteria.
Ms. Welsh stated Canoe the Kazoo is this weekend and Crazy for the Kazoo is in October also RecycleRamma
is on August 20, 2016 at Bailey Park.
Comm. Helmboldt shared information from Sarah Kelly sharing the Calhoun Board of Commissioners has
approved the expansion and site plan on the recycling center in Marshall construction begins 8/10/16.
City Commission updates :
Comm. Helmboldt stated that the City has decided to work with Jeff Spencer from the DEQ for free non-
regulatory compliance issues at some of the City Facilities.
Ms. Welsh is going to have a gentleman come in and assess if the Green Roof on the Police Station can be
moved. She also stated the Boiler would be reused.
Susan Anderson asked if any other environmental practices going to be used in the building of the new Police
Department building.
Asst. City Manager Reyes stated that there has been many discussions around being LEEDS certified, there are
also talks ongoing around low impact development.
Mr. Tribbett stated many features will be used, however we will not be LEEDS certified due the amount of money
and paperwork involved.

Comm. Faris mentioned there could be long term savings by using geo thermal, solar and/or wind assistance.
Asst. City Manager Reyes stated we are looking for opportunities with the help of EcoWorks to seek grants and
do energy audits. Also other grant opportunities are possible with the Dept. of Homeland Security and Michigan
Saves.
Asst. City Manager Reyes shared the City is creating a Clean Energy Fund to move cost saving from energy
saving projects and will be used towards environmental projects in the future.
Comm. Helmboldt stated the Wilson Tree farm was vandalized, someone mowed down and pulled all the trees.
Comm. Faris stated they do plan on replanting but not this season. Also at Metcalf Lake selected foresting has
been a big issue in this area they are working to make it usable and enjoyable.
New Business:
Comm. Helmboldt shared that Comm. Flores would like to take of the Chair for this Committee.
Motion was made to Nominate Comm. Flores to Chair the Sustainable BC Committee by Michael Myszka and
supported by Kathy Antaya, all yes none opposed. Motion past.
Motion was made by Michael Myszka and supported by Susan Anderson to change meetings to monthly
begging September 7, 2016 continuing on the 1st Wednesday of every month.
Old Business :
Ms. Welsh share document with the Committee, “Listing of City projects that promote Sustainability”
Asst. City Manager Reyes stated staff has identified areas that had prevented us from getting Gold such as;
Creating an Energy Fund, Low impact development, street light changes are possible in the future, using Energy
Start portfolio manager to track and make improvements.
Mr. Myszka shared the EPA announced Energy Star now have a waste tracking program available.
Comm. Helmboldt stated we need to start working on a plan to find a focus for this Committee.
The Committee discussed their mission and goals.
Comm. Helmboldt shared how the Disney Way training may help this Committee find a direction.
The Committee continued to discussed this.
Asst. City Manager Reyes shared a handout “Reviewing Environmental Sustainable Operations” reviewing this
information with the Committee.
Member Comm ent/Announcements :
Mr. Myszka announced that Fort Custer is having an alternative energy tour in October that may be of interest.
Ms. Anderson there is a webinar on the 25th at 2pm by the DEQ on environmental purchasing.
Next Meeting :
The next meeting of the Sustainable BC Committee is scheduled September 7, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at the
Department of Public Works in Room 204.
