Arts Commission Minutes City of Bellingham, Washington Tuesday 6:00 PM July 11, 2023 Planning Department Meeting Room & Zoom https://meetings.cob.org - Call to Order The Arts Commission meeting was called to order by the Chair at 6:00 PM. Agenda Items Public Meeting 1. Cordata Neighborhood Signs Dianne Tudor, neighborhood representative, presented a sketch of the Cordata Neighborhood sign to be placed on poles in eight different locations throughout the neighborhood. She said the board liked the idea of utilizing bold colors. They wanted to have a nod to the trees along Cordata Parkway as well. The sketch was a pretty rough sketch. The Commission discussed the elements of the sign. One feature they suggested be removed is the white line that runs in the middle of the mountain in the sketch. They liked the bold colors and other elements. Because the rendering is so rough, they asked Dianne Tudor to come back with a mockup done by the sign company and potentially bring another design to review. They recommend getting more of the neighborhood involved in weighing in on design if at all possible. 2. Cornwall Park Neighborhood Signs Nick Kelly, neighborhood representative, presented their neighborhood sign design which will also be placed on poles throughout the neighborhood. Their sign is purposefully simple. The design included a tree and a lamppost seen in the neighborhood. The Commission liked the simplicity of the design. There was a discussion about the lamppost being a bit larger but ultimately, the Commission recommended approval of the design, (see packet materials for design). 3. Further Discussion on Sculpture Donation Shannon Taysi wanted to discuss approach with the sculpture donation before drafting a call for artwork. Since last month’s meeting an artist reached out with a sculpture for sale. It is very whimsical and fun. The Commission had mentioned at the last meeting that Wayne Kangas’s work is something the donor may appreciated. She reached out to Wayne Kangas to see if he had anything. She showed the Commission the sculpture of a large duck. She was curious if this piece or this type would be something the Commission would consider. There was a discussion regarding the sculpture and ultimately the Commission said they still would like to move forward with the call for artwork to see what the results of that ends up being. They said to encourage this artist to submit this sculpture (or another) for consideration. 4. Approval of the May 2, 2023 Meeting Minutes Paul George moved and Kate Clark seconded the approval of the May 2, 2023 meeting minutes. All in favor. Other Business 1. Public Comment Period 2. For the Good of the Order and Annoucements Minutes prepared by: Shannon Taysi, Program Specialist
