Blacksburg High School AVID Presentation  Our Avid Senior Project Involving Hollie Zurenda, Emma Patterson, Gracie Walker, Bradley Childers, and Justin Wylie What is AVID? ● AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination ● The AVID program’s goal is to help all students to become completely career and college ready by graduation ● Every year the AVID senior class at Blacksburg High decides a class service project to help a problem in our community ● The topic we choose for this year was promoting physical fitness Local Statistics South Carolina obesity rate is at 16.6% and the United States is at 15.5% 58.2% of females in Cherokee County school district meets weight status while 55.9% of males meet the weight status Students who have recess are more likely to stay focused in school and behave well Students who are physically active have better grades, school attendance, and cognitive performance. Statistics by South Carolina DHEC South Carolina Department of Education Local Statistics Obesity among adults in Cherokee County is 44.0% while South Carolina is 34.0% Cherokee County poverty rate is higher than South Carolina at 19.4% and South Carolina being 15.2.% Obesity among adults in South Carolina is at 32.5% while Cherokee County is at 39.7% 38.2% of adults in Cherokee County have no physical activity and South Carolina is at 26.8% Statistics by South Carolina DHEC South Carolina Department of Education ● The circle around the ball field is ideal for families with small children. ● The paved loop is also good for strollers. ● We chose one big figure 8 loop, so people will know their walk will equal to one mile. ● We have provided a lay out of the trial to show where the amenities are located for reference. Summary ● Our partners with Clemson University have offered to fund the fitness-based signage. ● The trail map has been submitted to the ALLTRAILS application for access to all users. IV.
