Blue Springs Human Relations Commission Tuesday, October 20, 2015 6:30 pm East Conference Room of City Hall 903 W Main Blue Springs, MO 64015 Attendance: Kynette Campbell-Chair Gino Bueno-Vice Chair Jane Bowerman-Recording Secretary Diane Ellis-Jones Antoine Jennings Lori Moon Susan Stokenbury Chief Wayne McCoy-City Liaison Guest: Tamera Bueno Meeting called to order at 6:34pm 1. September minutes amended and approved 2. Meetings with other HRC's- Independence, Lee's Summit, Olathe, Raytown-Chair, co-chair, and one other commissioner will attend these collaborative meetings- connect with other HRC's to work on events and exchange information, goals Possibly volunteer at one of the other HRC's events- MLK, Jr. event-check with Mayor Carson Ross about attending this Gino Bueno suggested that we plan a year in advance for activities 3. Meeting with DOJ Community Relations Representative Rita Valenciano- Chief McCoy-NAACP- Ms. Valenciano is in the Department of Justice- Office of Community Relations- wi ll provide training at the cost of the Federal Government Agree to put together a training for mediation training- would take about 4 hours- no cost- all commissioners may attend. Training for police department will occur after the first of the year in January Gino Bueno moved that we proceed, and set up the training- Antoine Jennings seconded- the motion passed Kynette Campbell will move forward with setting up a date and time for the training Susan Stokenbury asked if this would qualify for certification-CDU Kynette will check to see if this includes certification 4. Grant Process-Gina Montgomery- will find out information about the grant- Kynette has not heard back yet on this information-$1,000 grant Dr. Ngomsi also suggested that we register with the Missouri Commission- Kynette is looking in to this registration 5. Kynette Campbell suggested that some of the commissioners attend the Human Rights Conference on November 6, 2015 at Saint Louis University School of Law Diane Ellis-Jones, Lori Moon, and Susan Stokenbury are interested in attending, as well. 6. Prayer Breakfast- November 4th_ Wednesday-6:30-8:00 am Jane Bowerman, Gino Bueno, Diane Ellis-Jones, Lori Moon are interested in attending-contact Chief McCoy to reserve your seat 7. Lori Moon suggested that we have 5 minutes at a Chamber luncheon to introduce the HRC 8. Chief also suggested we present to the Rotary Club 9. Student representative search- contacting school resource officers-anyone else have contacts? Lori Moon will contact Student Senate sponsors/school counselors Tamera Bueno suggested the HRC contact the student networks- Jag TV-to get the information out about the need for two student reps for the HRC. Tamera Bueno will contact the high schools regarding the student reps. 10. Report on HRC Fair-all contacts are willing to participate again-many groups would like to come in and speak to HRC commission- Gino and Tamera Bueno were in charge and carried this event out. Maybe look at a different time of year for the event-different time frame/day Food vendors did not follow through for various reasons Thanks to everyone who helped pass out information about the event Discussion followed about deciding on a time of year for this event next year-theme- purpose Lori Moon suggested we try small community activities to connect residents- donations for food-to build community among residents Budget recommendations for the HRC- March-start applying for the 2016-17 city budget Discussion about finding money for future events- possible grants? Ch ief McCoy will appropriate funds through the police department printing budget for business cards for the HRC 11. Update on Action Plan for 2016-Gino Bueno Prepare for presentation to the City Council- February 15t. Calendar for action plans Reviewed action plan set up in September Focus on our most important goals for next year Kynette will write an article for The Examiner about the HRC and what it is. 12. Short term action plan: Business cards- Gino Contact schools for student reps- Tamera Bueno/Lori Moon Write Examiner article- Kynette Campbell Contact other HRC's for meetings-Kynette Campbell 13. Public Safety Board forum- November lOth, 6pm- Gi rls on Fire program 14. HRC video- Chief McCoy- City has a full time videographer- David Watson- Chief suggested the City partner with HRC-put together a video on when you get stopped by a police officer-target young people-when would we do this video? Sometime during this fiscal year Discussion followed as to the benefits of video education 15.
