Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting November 5, 2019 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the Fieldhouse. Staff: Jayla Coleman Dena Duhon – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor -- Absent Richard Mitchem – Present Rachel Uptergrove – Present A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Keith Hannaman to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Mary Herrington presented on a new program, Murder Mystery 80s Prom. This event was held at Vesper Hall and was geared for ages 21 and older. Blue Springs Community Theater partnered with us and provided characters to play in the Murder Mystery. East-Forty Brewery also partnered with us to provide on-site drinks for patrons to purchase. People enjoyed the event and are interested in having it again which allows us to change the theme each year. Other comments were to shorten the mystery portion of the event so that people had a chance to socialize. Brooklynne Simbeck, who was recently hired on as a Recreation Supervisor, presented on Spooky Springs. This annual Halloween event was held at Adams Pointe Golf Course. There were many vendors at the event that provided activities for all the participants. One vendor, Blue Springs City Theatre provided the hayride scenes. Another vendor, Young Rembrandts provided face painting. The event also had a sponsor, Sunset Optimist Club. The event had a great turn out making around $2,500 off registration. Finances: Financials were reviewed by Dennis. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: We continue to be ahead of schedule with generating revenue from the Parks Sales Tax. RFQs for the aquatics study were received last week. Interviews with selected firms will begin this week. RFQs for Park Site Study are due November 6th and committee members will meet in December to conduct interviews with potential firms. New Business: Blue Spring Soccer Association recently met with Parks staff to discuss the possibility of the Park and Recreation Department taking over the program. Dennis explained that the department is very interested in doing so. The association is prepared to still run the coming Spring events and then Parks and Recreation will take over by Fall of next year. Miscellaneous: Due to a scheduling conflict with the Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony, the December Park 1 Commission meeting has been moved to December 10th. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Keith Hannaman and seconded by Reid Hanson. 2
