Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting October 4, 2022 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Jon Burke -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Gabriel Mejia – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Almitra Buzan – Absent City Council Liaison: Susan Culpepper –Absent Debbie Canfield – Present A motion was made by Ken Horrell and seconded by Debbie Canfield to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Marlene presented on a couple of fitness programs. Group exercise attendance numbers have been over 2,000 visits per month, with great attendance during the months of August and September. The Fieldhouse fitness schedule has all the aerobics and spin classes offered for members and day pass guests. On the fitness schedule is the type of classes, times they are held, location in the building, and the instructor that teaches the class. Written on the back guests will find descriptions of each class offered, detailing target points of the body and difficulty. Many guests are extremely pleased with the classes offered and the instructors. An upcoming fitness program is Thin it to Win it. This is an annual weight loss competition that has been offered yearly since Fieldhouse has been open previously titled Thinner Winner. The program is 6-weeks and each winner receives $125 gift card and a Jump Start Seminar with Marlene and personal Trainer Mary MacDonald. Finances: None. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Dennis presented an update on Park Sales Tax. The contracts for the construction of the Blue Springs Aquatic Center will be before City Council Monday October 3, 2022. It is the hope that the contracts will be approved at that meeting with construction starting December 2022. Additionally, the Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held November 3, 2022. The FY2022-23 projects include paving of Hidden Valley Football/Baseball Parking lots, new fencing at BMX, new bleachers, trail paving on Adams Diary Parkway, new irritation pump and window replacement for Adams Pointe Golf Club. Dennis presented that five of parks and recreation staff attended the NRPA Annual Conference in Phoenix, AZ recently. One of the presentations he sat in on was the National Gold Medal Award. This award honors public park and recreation agencies and state park systems throughout the United States and armed forces recreation programs worldwide that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services with fiscally sound business practices. There are five classes for the Public Agency Category based on population, with Blue Springs Parks and Recreation being in class IV. Will be 1 applying for this honor in 2023. It is our intent to continue to apply annually until we are hopefully recognized as a Grand Plaque recipient.
