Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting October 3, 2023 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Jon Burke -- Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Gabriel Mejia – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Ken Horrell – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Matt Asikainen Nick Brummel – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Kelly Finke Tony Lopez – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Almitra Buzan – Absent City Council Liaison: Ron Fowler –Present Debbie Canfield – Present Tara Johnson – Present A motion was made by Nick Brummel and seconded by Debbie Canfield to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Ben Harves and Chris Engler from Blue Springs BMX presented on the BMX Starting Hill Structure. Staff met with BMX representatives after the July park commission meeting to discuss options that could work for both organizations. Staff believes that the revised structure, while not a 100% metal structure, will be an acceptable option to move forward. Discussing a recommendation to present to city council motion was made by Almitra Buzan and seconded by Tony Lopez. Brian Bough, a resident of Blue Spring presented a request for the park commission. He is requesting park commissioners to look at options for a soccer turf field complex to host games and tournaments. He suggests the future park expansion in south Blue Springs as potential locations. Program/Activity Spotlight: Kelly Finke presented on Summer Day Camp. There was a total of 292 campers that participated in this program. This was a major increase from the previous year. The campers visited the Grain Valley pool 18 times and 12 visits to several Blue Springs parks. The most popular visits were to Chiefs Stadium, Science City, and Rink Ratz. There were also two guest speakers. Summer Day Camp received $700 worth of sponsorships and profited over $100,000. Finances: Dennis presented on financials. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: Ron Fowler explained that Christine Cates has become the new City Administrator. He also presented that Adams Dairy Golf Course is Celebrating 25 Years of business. Old Business: Dennis presented an update on the Blue Surf Bay Aquatics Center. The lobby, locker rooms, and other rooms have drywall installed with mudding and taping finishing up. Hard ceiling lids are being installed and painting is beginning. In the next couple weeks, tile work will begin. The surf simulator walls are being formed for the tank and mechanical room. Once this work is complete, the team will begin installation of the simulator. The indoor natatorium floor has been poured for the Lifestyle pool. Walls are being formed and rebar installed. The walls should be shot in late October. The lap pool has the floor formed and steel tied. It is anticipated that the floor pour will take place October 5. The splashpad drains are installed and under slab plumbing will occur over the next couple of weeks.
