Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting June 4, 2024 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Ken Horrell – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Derek Mayden Nick Brummel – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Tony Lopez – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Matt Asikainen Almitra Buzan – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Debbie Canfield – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor –Present Tara Johnson – Present Brian Markworth – Present Brittany Boswell - Present A motion was made by Tony Lopez and seconded by Almitra Buzan to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Derek Mayden presented a report on Storm Damage. Blue Springs Park shelter 2 had major damage from the storm from Memorial Day weekend. It is scheduled to be replaced in the next 1-2 years. At Hidden Valley park trees covered the roads. Lake Remembrance new bench will not be replaced. The storm debri drop-off at Nehlson Field at Pink Hill Park was very helpful for the community; patrons were thankful. Over 270+ hours total to cleanup all parks. Finances: None. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: Nick Brummel thanked staff for hard working opening Blue Surf Bay Waterpark and cleaning up parks since the major storm. City Council Liaison Report: Councilmember Fowler thanked staff for hard work with opening Blue Surf Bay Waterpark. Old Business: Justin presented an update on Aquatics. Some of the things that have gone well is receiving an overall positive feedback from patrons that have used the facility. Crowd sizes have maxed out day pass admission the first 6-days of operation. Parking has not been an issued. Some hardships faced are bad luck with he major storm had to close facility for 1-day of operation due to power outage. Long lines and answering phones have been difficult for staff to manage. Up next is adding more aquatics specific programs, and adjusting policies and procedures. New Business: Justin presented on Park Safety. He is planning to meet with Police Department Chief before August park meeting to discuss ideas on how to keep parks safe. Miscellaneous: July park commission meeting is moved to July 9th due to holiday. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Keith Hannaman and seconded by Debbie Canfield. 1
