Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting July 9, 2024 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Fieldhouse. Staff: Jayla Coleman Brian Markworth – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor –Present Brittany Boswell - Present A motion was made by Ken Horrell and seconded by Debbie Canfield to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Mary Herrington presented on Red, White, & Blue Springs event. Due to inclement weather, staff did have to change set up a bit and moved all activities from the softball fields at Young Park to the tennis courts. Vendors and participants enjoyed the updated set up. There were 18 vendors and 6 food trucks. All were pleased with the large crowds. The fireworks show was great. Due to the different set up, the live band did not have as much attendance. The variety of activities was great for participants. A major shoutout and thank you to the multiple full-time staff that helped with running errands, assist with set up or be on call for any mishap that might occur. Public Works and the Maintenance department did a great job. Finances: None. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: Councilmember Kaylor received great feedback from community about Red, White, & Blue Springs and the clean-up after. Old Business: Justin presented an update on Aquatics. Blue Surf Bay Waterpark has reached one full month of operations. Staff continues to push forward and provide a great facility for residents. The Brews & Blends coffee/smoothie bar opened a couple weeks ago. Traffic has been slow thus far, but staff is working with he vendor to increase visibility of the operations and promote it to members. Swim lessons is receiving positive feedback. No major incidents on aquatics side and good response to concessions and Lookout Bar. Justin then presented on Park Safety meeting report. Justin, Nick, and Keith had a meeting with Chief of Police, Muenz to continue discussing the safety throughout the park system. Nick reviewed different parks of what had an incident. Many officers a do a “park check” of any issues/concerns. Keith explained that Chief Muenz suggested a quarterly report to present to park commission that shows a review of park checks. Justin reviewed the report from Chief Muenz. Justin then presented status of current projects. Keystone Park playground dirt work has started. It will take 3-4 weeks to install. Justin then showed some pictures of the dirt work so far. Remaining projects to finish are the solar lights at Old Mill Park and Ward Park restroom renovations.
