Blue Springs Public Art Commission Minutes of the Meeting Thursday, January 15, 2015 East Conference Room 3:30 to 5:00 PM Attending: Ramon Magee, Lawrence Randall, Steve Willman, Kim Nakahodo, Barbara Landes, Kathe White, Eleanor Frasier. Invited Guest: Randy Cooper Call to Order: Eleanor called the meeting to order at 3:30PM Minutes: The November, 2014 minutes were approved as emailed (no December meeting) Updates/Information: Discussion was held on several sculptures: 1. “Fortitude III”. Eleanor reported that funding was complete, collecting $9510. There were 48 donors which included 44 individual donors. Blue Springs Art League ($1000), State Farm Foundation ($500), Hallmark Foundation ($800) and Blue Springs Public Art Commission ($2500) also contributed to the campaign. a. Discussion on plaque was that we would need to have a large enough plaque that it would be easily readable when approaching the sculpture. We will explore a different vendor, possibly a stainless steel plaque as it would be more weather resistant. Eleanor will send Kim the names of donors so she can design the plaque to discuss at February meeting. b. Discussion was that we needed to coordinate dedication plans with BSSD but we were hoping for April or May. 2. “Fire, Earth and Water”. The check was sent to Janet Kummerlein at end of December a. Discussion was that we would like a small brass colored plaque similar to those shown at 1 art galleries to be placed to the right of the fiber artwork. It will not need to be large but would include our logo, name of artwork, name of artist, and name of donor. Eleanor will provide info to Kim. b. We would like to have dedication which would include invitations to members of donor (Blue Springs Art League), artist and special friends. We will need to coordinate with Bill Essman to give us some times for the dedication. 3. “Moving the Stars”. a. The vendor for the plaque has been paid half. Ramon will check to see if the plaque is completed and Steve will arrange for final payment. b. At this point, we have not planned a dedication for this artwork. 4. “The Visit”. The CEO of St. Mary’s Manor has requested that he see the artwork and arrangements are being made for Eleanor, Steve, and Randy Cooper to visit with him and show him the artwork. We hope he will agree to the previous plans of placing “The Visit” in the lobby and for the hanging arrangements that Randy thinks is necessary. 5. “Breath”. Eleanor read the email from Bill Essman indicating that Marriorr would be able to assist in purchase of the sculpture. DECISION: By unanimous approval, we will purchase “Breath” using Walmart money and place it somewhere else. The asking price by the artist is $10,000 (less the $2500) already paid. Discussion of possible placements were: South library (near the entrance) so it could be seen in approaching the door or from a window inside the building or in front of City Hall. Eleanor asked that everyone look at these locations before the February meeting. 6. Print Graphics Calendars. Eleanor reported that calendars have been sent to previous donors to public art (donors from 2006 to 2014) and to the artists whose work is shown on the calendar. 7. Coasters for “Fortitude III” donors. These have been ordered and will be given to donors at dedication. Art Maintenance. Eleanor reported that we would spend around $1500 of funds from the current budget on art maintenance. She asked Randy Cooper for his suggestions and for priorities. These were: 1. “Quasarc”. Randy felt that this was the number one artwork that needed our attention. The glass lens that Nicole Beck had used have either dropped out or destroyed in some way. He had researched possible replacement lens but felt the better way was to create new lens from one-half inch Lexan, cut to order. These will be flat lenses that are easily replaced if necessary. He also recommended that we paint the artwork as some rust is showing up. Larry looked at sample color chips and we discussed several choices. We will re-visit these color options at the February meeting and make a decision at that time. Estimated cost: $300 2. “OH!”. We need to have this artwork sandblasted and powder coated. The original estimate was $800 but we expect it to be more. We will also need to create a new base. Discussion was that we needed to move it from its current location as the tree it is near has grown too close to the artwork and it is not visible as before. We did not make any decision where to place it. Discussion was that it would be nice to have it in a different location so it reaches a new audience. 3. “Blue Springs.Net”. We need to repaint the oars and do some maintenance on the net and other posts. Discussion was that this was a complicated artwork to maintain and that we contact Metallab (who repaired “BattleCross”) to see what they recommend (there is no cost for an estimate) and then go from there. We expect that this might be more costly to repair. 4. “Tapped”. This artwork was removed from the tree before it was cut down. Parks will install in another pine tree in Burrus Old Mill Park at no additional cost. 5. “Sundance”. Randy suggested we get a maintenance recommendation from the artist. It has been removed while work on the lake is underway and there is a plan for returning it to the water in the future. 6. Other works will need to be reviewed.to see if repairs are needed. Randy suggested we need to have art maintenance information as part of the purchase agreement with the artist so that we know what is required. Discussion was that this request be made as part of the initial contract when we select 2 artists to display as it may affect our decision to purchase if art maintenance is too complicated or expensive. “Remnants Restored” 2015 Call to Artist 1. Applications are coming in and to date we have 10 in each category (steel and aluminum). Eleanor has predicted a total of 30 by the application deadline of February 6. After that date the applications will be closed and the selection panel will begin to jury the artists who applied. 2. We reviewed the names of the jurors. There will be seven jurors in total who will independently look at the applications beginning on February 9 and vote on a matrix of one to seven. CAFÉ will tally the results and identify the top two artist candidates in each category. 3. During the week of March 23 (as mutually scheduled) the finalists will present to the Selection Panel their conceptual plans for a sculpture. PAC members will be invited to attend the presentations. We have not yet arranged for where the presentations will be made but we are thinking of a room in Adams Pointe Conference Center. Other 1. Kim reported that the Bike Shop is planning to have a new mural on the side of the building and wants to know if we have a muralist to suggest. 2. The insurance company which has the David Cook mural is planning to replace that mural with another and wants to engage an artist who will design with a theme related to the downtown 3. Downtown Alive will be having their annual Picadilly fundraiser on March 12 at Adams Pointe Conference Center beginning at 5:30pm. This auction will help raise money, some of which will pay for the sculptures. Next Meeting: Thursday, February 19 in East Conference Room, 3:30 to 5:00 PM
