Updates/Information
Plaque Signatures. Eleanor reported that she had received a signature from Nicole Beck and that
Cecilia Luena wrote that she was sending hers (note: Cecilia signature arrived). We still have not
heard from Karl Salitar but Eleanor recalled that he was an older gentleman and may not be
practicing as an artist now.
Plaque Status.
1. “Mother and Child” is completed and ready to install when Parks can schedule
2. “Breath” has been approved. Need to select color and size of signage. Steve said the base was
designed to allow the plaque to be applied to it.
3. “Quasarc” and “Sundance” plaques need to be designed (now that we have signature).
“BlueSprings.Net” Restoration. No new information
Vietnam Veterans Event. Eleanor thanked everyone for their assistance in the success of the event
which was attended by some 250 people. We were pleased with the overall program ceremony and
the relatively good weather. The Mayor was pleased, especially with the Quilt of Valor. The event
will be shown on YouTube soon. We enjoyed watching wonderful photos taken by Ramon.
Re-Dedication of “OH!”
Invitations. Eleanor reported that invitation postcards were printed and sent to previous donors and
Blue Springs Art League members. Kathe and Barbara addressed postcards to various City
personnel and others on a VIP list.
Program. Barbara confirmed that the Gordaniers and OPC representative would be there to receive
the Certificates of Appreciation. Barbara had contacted artist Diane Mattern who is sending an artist
statement. Eleanor is arranging with Sherry to design and print the programs
Refreshments. Barbara and Kathe will have refreshments prepared, all items beginning with the
letter “O”. We nibbled on example food, Oatmeal Cookies, during the meeting.
11th Temporary Public Art Exhibit
1. Future Plans.
a. Greta and Larry presented ideas for placing sculptures along Adams Dairy Parkway, with the
suggestion that we place art on the west side of the roadway which Parks maintains. We hope to
eventually place artworks as far as Moreland School Road. As any sculptures are acquired, we can
place on permanent pads and then move around to increase interest. Larry used the example of
“Subdued Radiance” as unexpected artwork for motorists and walkers to enjoy.
b. Discussion was on alternate ideas for when to place the Call to Artist, how long to keep art on
loan, and when to install-deinstall. We decided that this year, we would have the Call as soon as
possible, giving a longer lead time for City Council approval of artist contracts, and that we would
have the art installed the last week of March and keep up for an 11 month period.
Proposed Theme.. Our previous discussion was that we wanted whimsical art along the parkway.
a. Larry suggested that whimsical art may be perceived as a “feminine” word and that we might use
it in a description but not the theme. Ramon looked up synonyms of the words (mercurial,
unpredictable, temperamental, flighty, quirky) and we felt we could include those as concepts in
any theme we chose.
b. Various themes were suggested: Serious Fun, On A Whim, Impulse, Twistical, Suspended,
Unseen, Uncanny, Unwind, Quizacal, Mischevious, Playful, Capricious, Why not Whimsey.
c. After vote, we chose the theme of “Capricious” for the 11th Temporary Public Art Exhibition.
CAFÉ Agreeement and Requirements.
Eleanor asked Ramon to assist Carol Reed in the CAFÉ agreement so that we can complete as soon
as possible and so that Steve can arrange for City approval of the one-year contract for the Call to
Artist. We discussed some of the details to place in the contract which requires that we have a
theme, various dates, and methodology for artist display of credentials.
Call to Artist Information
Eleanor said she would complete the Call to Artist and that we would approve at the May meeting.
Our plan is that we would immediately place the Call on CAFE so that a longer time would be
available for artists to create work for the exhibition. Install dates would still be the last week of
March, 2018 and de-install would be the first week of March, 2019.
Treasure Quest. Greta provided update on the plans for the Treasure Quest which we want to
have available for students and for the public before summer. We will also have at Corks and
Canvas.
Public Art in the Public School. Greta reported that she will be in contact with Stefan Hodes to
get his ideas that he planned when he was a BSSD student teacher.
