MINUTES of SPECIAL MEETING
of the BOARD of COMMISSIONERS
of the CITY of BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY
held NOVEMBER 28, 2006
The Board of Commissioners of the City of Bowling Green, Kentucky met in special session at
The Historic L&N Depot, 401 Kentucky Street, Bowling Green, Kentucky at 9:30 a.m. on November
28, 2006. Mayor Elaine N. Walker called the meeting to order. Assistant City Manager/City Clerk
Katie Schaller called the roll, and the following members were present: Commissioner Brian “Slim”
Nash, Commissioner Delane Simpson, Commissioner Brian K. Strow, Commissioner Mark D. Alcott
and Mayor Elaine N. Walker. Absent: none. There was a full quorum of the Board of
Commissioners.
CITY MANAGER
City Manager Kevin D. DeFebbo reviewed the selection process undertaken to appoint a new
Chief of Fire for the City of Bowling Green. He indicated that there were three internal candidates
and that it was a difficult decision. Mr. DeFebbo stated that his recommendation was to promote
Assistant Fire Chief Greg Johnson to the position of Chief of Fire to be effective December 1, 2006.
Mayor Walker commented about the long history of leadership in the Fire Department,
recognizing former Fire Chiefs Vindell Webster and Gerry Brown, and Interim Fire Chief Walter
Jordan, who were all in attendance. She stated that she entrusted Mr. Johnson with the leadership of
the department.
MUNICIPAL ORDER NO. 2006 – 283
MUNICIPAL ORDER APPROVING THE PROMOTION OF
GREGORY ALLEN JOHNSON TO FIRE CHIEF, FIRE DEPARTMENT
Summary of Municipal Order No. 2006 – 283 was read by the Assistant City Manager/City
Clerk. Motion was made by Simpson and seconded by Nash for consideration of said Municipal
Order. With no discussion, a roll call vote was taken.
ROLL CALL: Voting Yea: Nash, Simpson, Strow, Alcott and Walker
Voting Nay: None
Municipal Order No. 2006 - 283 was approved by unanimous vote.
Interim Fire Chief Walter Jordan pinned Mr. Johnson with the official Chief of Fire rank.
Incoming Chief of Fire Johnson made a few remarks thanking everyone for being in attendance, and
especially his family. He commented that the Bowling Green Fire Department has been recognized as
an outstanding department, not only in the state, but nationally as well. He stated that he looked
forward and felt challenged to lead the department into the future.
ADJOURNMENT
This being a special meeting and with no further business to come before the Board of
Commissioners, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Mayor Walker declared this meeting adjourned.
