I. Call to Order – The Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at 6:06pm
pm by Chairman, David Akard.
II. Approval of July 13, 2017 Minutes – Jason Booher makes a motion to approve the minutes.
Bennett Cowan seconds the motion. All in favor, motion passes.
III. Introduction of New Members
A. Virginia (Ginny) Senter
B. Curt Rutherford
IV. Old Business
A. Nature Center Expansion – The building is complete. The interior build out is
moving fast. The expected opening date for the expansion will be October 13th or 14th.
It will not be completely finished but will be good enough to open to the public.
B. Aquatics needs Study- Terry advised that the cost without the Natatorium was
approximately 4.2 million. This study will be used as a guide should Haynesfield pool
become inoperable. Additional copies were made available to the commission.
V. New Business
A. Ida Stone Jones Community Tennis Center
• 2017 USTA Facility Award- This will be given in October in Orlando, FL
B. Adult Flag Football- Taylor Harmon, the new Recreation Programmer is holding a
meeting next month to gauge interest in startup and to get an idea for rules and
regulations.
C. Comprehensive Trails and Greenways Plan/Bike Lanes – The Commission has been
tasked with making a recommendation for a starting point to City Council. Terry went
over all of the trails that were plotted in the plan. The Commission was asked to keep
in mind that this was about moving people to places. Jason feels like it needs to be a
loop to downtown. It needs to be focused on recreation first and economic second.
Many feel that it should connect in some way to Steele Creek Park. Trails of focus are
Beaver Creek, Avoca Greenway, Cedar Creek Greenway, Sinking Creek Greenway,
Wellmont Greenway and the Wes Davis Greenway Expansion. Ben suggested that
signage and paint needs to be a focus and adding bike racks to the city buses. After
much discussion the commission was ask to come up with their top choices and submit
those to April. She will then compile them into one document to be discussed at the
next meeting.

IX. Adjourned: David Akard made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Susie Chandler seconds
the motion. Meeting adjourned at 7:38 pm.
