1) Call Meeting to Order – Meeting called to order by Mr. George E. Olivo at 5:32pm.
2) Discussion and Action of Approval of Minutes – Ms. Pena motions to approve the minutes. Mr. Leal
seconds. All in favor.
3) Public Comment – No comments.
4) Library Report
a) Adult Services, presented by Bertha Gomez: Ms. Gomez starts review programs from the month of February such as
Date Night at the Library, Relationships Matter, Adult Computer Literacy Classes, First-Time Homebuyer Workshop,
and the Citizenship Class. She then reviews programs for the month of March such as the Golden Egg Book Hunt, Adult
DIY Slime Night, Anime Movie Night showing of “Justice League War,” Computer Classes, and Tax Info Q&A.
b) Youth Services, presented by Katie Hernandez: Ms. Hernandez recalls pervious programs from the month of February
such as Lego Day, Bouncing Babies, Love Bugs craft activity, and Hello Kitty craft activity. She also reviewed the
upcoming Easter Eggstravaganza event taking place on March 18th and 20th, at the Southmost and Main branches
respectively. Ms. Hernandez also reviewed additional upcoming programs for the month of March such as Kids Night
with a puffy paint activity and movie night showing of “Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse.” Mr. Olivo thanks Ms.
Hernandez for her report.
c) Teen Services, presented by Beatriz Morales: Ms. Morales reviews programs from the previous month of February such
as the Anti-Valentines Party, Japanese Chocolate Tasting, and Teen Advisory Club. Ms. Garcia reviewed programs for the
month of March such as Teen Night Laser Tag, showing of anime Jujutsu Kaisen, Easter Eggstravaganza, and Teen
Advisory Club. Ms. Morales then reviews the passive Teen Event, Blind Date with a Book, which had 20 participants at
the Main Branch and 26 participants at the Southmost Branch. Mr. Olivo thanks Ms. Morales for her report.
d) Makerspace, presented by Anthony Chavarria: Mr. Chavarria starts by going over the previous month’s programs such
as DIY Terrarium and Starry Night Painting. He announced the return of Lazaro Castro as Makerspace Advisor for the
Southmost Library Branch. Mr. Chavarria reviewed popular machines used by patrons which are poster printing, 3D
printing, and Laser Engraving. Future equipment that Mr. Chavarria and Mr. Castro are trying to bring to the library
include an embroidery or direct to garment printer. He then states for the month of April, a resin jewelry making event
will be taking place.
e) Outreach, presented by Courtney Taylor: Ms. Taylor reviews outreach events from the months of January such as
Jubilee Career Fair, Brownsville Farmer’s Market, Winter Haven Resort, PD- office outreach, B-Metro Appreciation Day,
and MPO office. Ms. Taylor also reviews events from the month of February such as Wild Tales- Zoo, Children’s
Museum, B-Metro, IDEA Community Day, Brownsville Farmer’s Market, and Gonzalez Elementary- Career Day. Ms.
Taylor then announces that our library was awarded the 2023 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award by The
Texas Municipal Library Directors’ Association.
f) Friends of the Library, presented by Bobbi Vasquez: Ms. Vasquez begins by thanking the library staff for their
assistance last month with the book sale at both library branches. Ms. Vasquez shares that the Main Branch did $2,600 for
the month of February and over $400 at the Southmost Branch.
6) Adjournment - Before asking for the motion, Mr. Olivo shares that the City of Brownsville is hosting Dia De Los
Ninos and suggests that the library should participate. Mr. Leal motions to adjourn. Ms. Hernandez seconds. All in favor.

Purpose: To work hand in hand with library staff by setting goals, objectives, suggesting programing and services
for the Brownsville Public Library System with the community in mind.

Pursuant to Chapter 551, Title 5 of the Texas Government Code, the Texas Open Meetings Act, NOTICE IS
HEREBY GIVEN that a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Brownsville Public Library System will
conduct a Regular Meeting on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 5:30p.m., at the Main Branch Library
located at 2600 Central Blvd., Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas, 78520 and virtually, in
accordance with Article III, Section 1, Ordinance 91-1245 of the City of Brownsville.
Meeting will be a hybrid meeting and members of the public wishing to participate virtually in the
