1) Call Meeting to Order – Meeting called to order by Mr. Martin Leal at 5:32pm.
2) Discussion and Action of Approval of Minutes – Ms. Nora Garza motions to approve the minutes. Ms.
Audria West seconds. All in favor.
3) Public Comment – Public comment made by Carlos Chacon of the Brownsville Sunrise Rotary Club. Mr. Chacon
shares that the Rotary Club is always available to help the library or participate in any event. He states to reach out to Mr.
George Olivo or any Rotarians from their club.
4) 30th Anniversary Celebration Update – Mr. Guerra updates the board with the new date for the 30th
Anniversary Celebration which is September 25th at 5:30-8:00PM. He shares that it will be the same program
as planned before.
5) Proposal of Library Opening Hours – Mr. Guerra shares that changing the library opening hours from
10:00am to 9:00am is under consideration. He states that he has not shared this with administration yet but
would like the opinion of the board first regarding this possible change. Mr. Guerra shares that there are
patrons that wait outside the library before 10:00am and estimates at Main there are about 20-30 people. He
states this initiative is still in the early stages and is not official. Feedback from the board is positive since there
are patrons that arrive before opening hours which demonstrates a need to open earlier.
6) Library Report
a) Adult Services, presented by Jose A. Gonzalez: Mr. Gonzalez begins by providing updates regarding the Little
Libraries. He shares that for this last month, he delivered 129 books to 11 Little Libraries. He then states that are
currently on a break with the Adult Computer Classes, but the previous classes were very successful. Mr. Gonzalez then
discusses the Amelia Earhart presentation which took place this past month. He also provides information on other past
programs such as Picnic Day, Sanrio Trivia, and Adult Services Committee. Mr. Gonzalez reviews upcoming programs
for August such as the Back-to-School Fair, Financial Literacy Workshop, Let’s Get Cooking, Glass Marble Candle
Holder, 10 Warning Signs of Dementia and Alzheimer’s, and Should I Register to Vote.
b) Youth Services, presented by Kayla Trevino: Ms. Trevino begins by reviewing the Summer Reading Program which
ended on July 31st. She shares number of patrons that participated in the program and pictures from the events that took
place during this program. Ms. Trevino then provides upcoming regular scheduled programming such as Stories and
Snacks, Stories y Cuentos, Lego Lab, Toddler Play Date, Kid’s Night: Games and Puzzles, Kid’s Night: Bug in a Jar
Suncatcher.
c) Teen Services, presented by Beatriz Morales: Ms. Morales begins by reviewing programs that took place in the month
of July such as Teen DIY Rockets and Teen DIY Artifacts. She provides programs coming up for the month of August
such as Teen Game Night, One Piece Scavenger Hunt, and Teen Advisory Club.
d) Makerspace, presented by Lazaro Castro: Mr. Castro begins by reviewing the stats for past Makerspace Events
“Pokémon Go Fest” and “DIY Nooks Cranny.” He also discusses the “Stained Glass Painting” program which is taking
place in the month of August.
f) Friends of the Library, presented by Bobbi Vasquez: Ms. Vasquez begins by sharing that they are working on the
schedule to keep one of the shops open almost every day. She states that she has been moving old stock and making room
for new merchandise. Ms. Vasquez then states they are preparing to have another sale in February.
6) Adjournment – Mr. Leal motions to adjourn. Ms. Hernandez seconds. All in favor. Meeting adjourns at 6:06 PM.

Purpose: To work hand in hand with library staff by setting goals, objectives, suggesting programing and services
for the Brownsville Public Library System with the community in mind.

Pursuant to Chapter 551, Title 5 of the Texas Government Code, the Texas Open Meetings Act, NOTICE IS
HEREBY GIVEN that a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Brownsville Public Library System will
conduct a Regular Meeting on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 5:30p.m., at the Southmost Branch
Library located at 4320 Southmost Rd., Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas, 78521 and virtually, in
accordance with Article III, Section 1, Ordinance 91-1245 of the City of Brownsville.
