Regular/Special: Joint Police Committee Date and Time: January 6, 2026 at 5:30 pm Location: Deerfield Village Hall, 23 West Nelson St., Deerfield, WI Members Present: Cambridge – Trustee Jennifer Trendel, Kristin Blackwood, Sharon Jacobson Deerfield – Trustees: Tessa Dunnington, Kerri Hewitt, Gary Wieczorek (Number of Members needed to meet quorum requirements: 4) Members Excused: None Others Present: Mike Corrigan, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy 1. Roll Call The Joint Police Committee was called to order at 5:30 pm and roll call was taken. All members present. 2. Approval of the January 6, 2026 Joint Police Committee Agenda Motion by Hewitt, second by Dunnington to approve the January 6, 2026 Joint Police Committee meeting agenda. Motion carried unanimously (6 – 0). 3. Approval of the December 12, 2025 Joint Police Committee Meeting Minutes Motion by Hewitt, second by Dunnington to approve the December 12, 2025 Joint Police Committee meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously (5 – 0 – 1, Jacobson abstained). The committee will need to approve the minutes from the October meeting at the next meeting. Cambridge to send Clerk Gingher the minutes of that meeting. 4. Review and discussion of Court and Police Reports a. Court: September, October & November Joint Police Committee January 6, 2026  Motion by Jacobson, second by Dunnington to approve the court reports for September, October and November. Motion carried unanimously (6-0) b. Police: September, October, November & December Deputy Corrigan provided highlights on major incidents: attempted homicide suspect instance, which created additional cases. Some calls started as domestic in the reports, which resulted in additional resources but were later changed to other categories. “Shop with a Cop” took place in December with three children in the community. Trendel, is there a way to put the quarter statistics on one page (executive summary) so the data can be a little more concise and trends can be seen? There is a car that is in the way of Public Works plows on Washburn that has been ticketed. Motion by Jacobson, second by Hewitt to approve the police reports for September, October and November. Motion carried unanimously (6-0) 5. Preliminary discussions on the police services contract with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Every person who signed the contract is no longer in the stated positions. It also listed the names of both villages and not the positions. It does not mention how the deputy selection process works, as it states it is up to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies are employees of the county and not of the villages, so that could be a factor in potential lawsuits. Additionally, the contract does not specify that other deputies will be called when the village- dedicated deputies are unavailable. Also, we need to determine if there is coverage for a deputy who is on extended leave. Deputy Corrigan states that typically, they will work eight hours of overtime a week if additional coverage is needed, as there has not been a dedicated additional deputy to provide coverage. There could be an option for a “temporary fill-in.” Wieczorek would like the committee to review the existing contract, and Deputy Corrigan will invite Captain Simpson (new to the role) to the next meeting. 6. Discussion on schedule and work hours of the Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies Wieczorek would like to understand how coverage is going with Deputy Lauritsen, now retired. Deputy Corrigan stated that detective interviews are on January 20, which include a potential candidate for our village deputies that the committee interviewed. Deputies Corrigan and O’Donnell sat down and went through their schedules to ensure there is coverage for the villages, specifically from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m., which is the highest call volume Joint Police Committee January 6, 2026  period. The entire Sheriff’s Office is on 8-hour shifts. Wieczorek stated that if the villages had 24/7 coverage, we would need six deputies. 7. Consideration to move into closed session pursuant to Wis. Stat. 19.85(1)(c) to discuss employment of a Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy dedicated to the Villages of Cambridge and Deerfield Motion by Hewitt, second by Dunnington to not move into closed session. Motion carried unanimously (6 - 0). 8. Set next committee meeting: date, time, and location. Next meeting the Captain Simpson will be invited, so we need to determine if we hold the meeting on February 3 or 10. Motion by Dunnington seconded by Trendel to hold the next committee meeting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at 5:00 pm at the Deerfield Village Hall. Motion carried unanimously (6 – 0). 9. Adjournment Motion by Dunnington seconded by Hewitt to adjourn the Joint Police Committee meeting at 6:16p.m. Motion carried unanimously (6 – 0).
