So I’m just here to ask if there is going to be, and if there is… um, can I be kept in the loop or somebody can be appointed to keep me in the loop or even appointed to be able to work with me and a couple other companies to put in the forefront of juvenile delinquency. Whereas, Walter Williams was born in Canton, Ohio on August 25, 1943, where his love of music began at St. Mark’s Baptist Church as a soloist and lead member of the choir; and Whereas, Hailing from the Canton/Cleveland area, Walt is one of the founding members of the renowned R&B group, The O’Jay’s, whose achievements include 18 hit albums, 52 singles and 12 number one hits on major charts; and Whereas, In 2005, Walt and his fellow members of The O’Jays were inducted into Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2009 received a BET (Black Entertainment Television) Lifetime Achievement Award; and Whereas, Walt caringly gave back to his community through his support and participation at the Southeast Community Center Christmas Party on December 17, 2022, which included a generous donation of toys for the children in attendance. Now Therefore Be It Resolved, That we, the Members of Canton City Council, do hereby go on record commending Walter Williams for his continuing support of the Canton community and his tremendous generosity. (Applause) MEMBER SMITH: Okay, first of all, I’d just like to introduce to you all… I’m gonna let them do it though… uh, Walt’s family which is standing here, and this is what I want you to know is, that generous donation came just from minor conversation which… uh, the Mayor and myself entertained Walt downtown at Centennial Plaza, COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 111 JOURNAL PAGE 17 MINUTES OF THE MEETING JANUARY 23, 2023 and I mentioned to him what we were getting ready to do in the community. He said well, you know what? Let me know. And I did just that, and he came down. And in this newspaper… I wanted him to have this newspaper because there’s a picture of him in here donating and giving us the money when we were there at the Urban League. So I want you to give that to him, and… uh, this is the proclamation because we really appreciate what he did for the children of the city and especially the southeast end. Also, Walt couldn’t be here today because he’s… uh, in the studio recording, but guess what he said, make sure you know and let the people know that I will be a contributor each year that they give this Christmas party. And we thank him so very much. This is Walt’s daughter, and so I’m gonna let the rest of them introduce theirself. WALT WILLIAMS’ DAUGHTER: I… I just wanted to say thank you on my father’s behalf. Um, growing up in Canton and the way that life turned for him to be able to unfortunately leave Canton, but to become successful somewhere else, with his career slowing down now, we’re doing a lot more in the city and I… I noticed that it’s really important to him lately within the last year or so that anything that he puts his name to he wants to be in Canton. So we started a couple businesses here, and like she said, we want to continue to be a part of these different types of organizations. Uh, my dad lost his mother when he was six months old, so to be able to give back to children who are less fortunate, it really touches home for him. So… um, he definitely wanted me to come down and say thank you personally from him, and… um, we’ll do what we can for the city of Cle… uh, Canton. Thank you. (Applause) PRESIDENT SHERER: Thank you. Whereas, Born Michael Lamar White II on June 17, 1999, Trippie Redd is an American rapper, singer and songwriter; and Whereas, Hailing from the Canton/Massillon area, Trippie is one of the most prominent members of the SoundCloud rap scene, which gained mainstream acclaim in late 2010; and Whereas, Included in his achievements are three singles and five albums that hit the Billboard Charts; and Whereas, Trippie gladly gave back to his community by supporting and participating at the Southeast Community Center Christmas party on December 17, 2022 including a generous donation of toys for the children in attendance. In fact, this is Trippie Redd’s cousin, and Trippie Redd has sent what, over two thousand turkeys here and we didn’t know where to distribute them to, and his cousin just happened to call me because we are good… uh, good friends and so forth and I said I’ll get rid of them for you. In fact, the Lord blessed us that it was cold that day. I said just put them on my porch. And I got on Facebook and started calling people and it was like a parade. So… (chuckles)… and people came and got the turkeys. Then the conversation went on to say that, you know, this is just something that Trippie wanted to do and would like to do, and he wanted to give back to the community. So you all know a light went off in my head like well, you know, we’re getting ready to give this Christmas party, you think… and it (inaudible) from there. And when we knowed anything… uh, some of… Babby and all of them was down there, it had truckloads of toys, and these wasn’t just toys, these was bicycles… uh… TRIPPIE REDD’S COUSIN: Hover boards. MEMBER SMITH: …scooters and so forth and hover boards. And we just wanted to show our appreciation for him just taking out the time and just wanting to share his greatness with our kids here in Canton. It is our responsibility to hold the purse strings of the community and hold people financially responsible in the Administration and anybody we give our tax dollars to. So I’d like it part of the record that during Committee, I did ask the Director of the Regional Chamber of Commerce for a detailed list on how we were going to spend… how he was going to spend our tax dollars. At that point, if looks could kill, I’d have probably died. Uh, this is a professional service agreement that has absolutely no agreement attached. There’s no stipulations, there’s no outlines, it’s here’s a blank check, spend it on three projects and economic and community development as you see fit. It’s not a professional service agreement because there is no agreement because there are no stipulations to it. Also I know, in the past I have heard from numerous Council Members that the Chamber of Commerce is our Economic and Community Development Department. However, we spend $95,000.00 on an Economic and Development Director. We spend $118,000.00 annually on a Planning Director, which was supposed to be covered by outside funds, but now is solely paid by tax dollars in the city.
