Our first speaker is Rami Hamdan. RAMI HAMDAN: My name is Rami Hamdan 7692 Peachmont Ave NW. Uh…so I’m just here to ask you guys again to vote on a proposal for cease fire in the Gaza strip. Uh…it’s interesting I was listening to you guys talk about being environmentally friendly. The most environmentally friendly thing you could do is to stop bombing…uh….and sending weapons and causing destruction on land. Especially on innocent people. I have tons of photos of…of baby…there was a…the United States dropped aid actually. I was really interesting…uh…the air drop of aid right, you know with a parachute and everything. And we watched moments later the Israeli bomb that exact location, where there was staring innocent people running for food. You know…I mean it’s…I hear you guy talking about a vehicle, which I personally…I deal with cell phones all day. I deal with lithium batteries all day. I don’t think that lithium is sustainable especially if you care about how it’s sourced…you know… in the Congo, where it comes from. And there is slave labor used to get this lithium out the mines. It’s in my opinion, not environmentally friendly, but the environmentally friendly thing is to stop the bombing. Stop the sensation of fire…uh….we are fast right now it’s our month of Ramadan. So, I just watched a video of a guy who is in a hospital giving…help to patients all day and he asked the people not to post pictures of food because he’s also fasting all day and he had to break his fast with flavor water. Right, this is our fault, this is an American people’s fault. We paid for this, we let the Israelis do whatever they want. We let them go and they’re actually trying to destroy this Country actively. You know we have open our eyes and see that we need help here. Specially in Canton, Ohio…especially here. We need to put money into the schools, we need to out money into the…the homeless people. We need to you know, we don’t need to worry about (inaudible) people (laughing). That’s the last thing we need to be worried about I’m sorry. We need to worry about putting into the kids here. The Football Hall of Fame also is a…is…we need to….we need put money into the schools. We need to put money into teachers…you know. We should raise the pay of teachers not the…the law enforcement as much. I mean with law enforcement is important but not as much as it…you know at that level. We should be putting money into the schools. Not into all these extra….curricular things. It should be into the children and it should be to teachers and teaching because I talk to kids all day. They are not at the level they need to be in education. Especially in this city. So, once again I’m asking you for a cease of fire…uh…please vote on it. It’s the easiest thing you can do. The President did it finally…and it’s politically uh…advantageous for you right as well. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you sir. (Applause) Our next speaker if is Errick Freeman. ERRICK FREEMAN: Hello. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Hi. ERRICK FREEMAN: 1129 7th St NW. I know this cannot be 12 inches cause that’s a foot. The Arts in its purest forms is not meant to be confined with the boundaries of any individual group or entity. It’s a means of self-expression transcending labels in societal norms. However, when the arts are used to exploits others it loses its authenticity and should no longer be called as such. Instead it because a mere tool for profit and self-interest. I came across a discussion that shed light on the paradox within our local art community. In an online art group a question was posed, what’s the best way to gain exposure for your art and attract more people to it. A local artist responded, “Create art that sells.” I laughed because this response, all those seemingly innocent, implies that the sole purpose of art is to be marketable to become famous. It’s a mindset that diminishes the true essence of art. Regrettably, there are individuals within a creative field how are willing to sacrifice the artistic integrity of our local art community and pursue them influence and fame. However, in their pursuit they become monolithic figures forsaking their artistic integrity for personal gain. I…I recently watched an online video COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 141 MINUTES OF THE MEETING MARCH 18, 2024 where an artist accurately stated…“The arts aren’t elevating and the conversations are become cheaper.” This sentiment resonates with the current state of the creative community. (Microphone went out) …works are often attributed to single artist. Neglecting the contributions of the entire group. Some local individuals have exploited…and undermine our communities for financial gain. All in the name of social media validation. These issues are not isolated incidence. They permeate our community but locally and internationally. (Microphone went out)…have in common is the manipulation of upper connects to gain an advantage. Refocusing on the main point of this (Microphone went out)…we should not be exploited. (Microphone went out)…personal possession. The arts will always be about expressive freedoms. There’s no reason to involve oneself in the arts if lacking creativity. (Buzzer)…just as you wouldn’t hire a plumber to do an electricians job, thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Applause) Our next speaker is Moncef Ben Abid. If you could please…give us your residential address for the record. MONCEF BEN ABID: Dear Council Members. My name is Moncef, last name Ben Abid. Uh…I love at 1300 Dunkeith Dr. NW Canton, Ohio 44708. I would like to mention first my purpose of this speech. I am pleading that…asking you to adopt and pass a Resolution for a fire in Gaza. (Microphone went out)…a daily bases the atrocities of (Microphone went out)…on the Palestinians are merciless and have gone beyond any limit that any of us can sit in his mind. (Microphone went out). It is not acceptable. It went way beyond (inaudible). We are not into (inaudible) politics. Instead we are standing with kids, women, elders and humanity is…as a whole. To those who are not (inaudible)…I want to tell them that over thirty-one thousand people were killed. Among those twenty-one are women and kids. Let’s stand in the right side of history…by passing (Microphone went out) Let us be a reminder that we stood by the humanity. Let’s say no to cruelty, to ethnic cleansing, to manmade anger, to forcible displacement, to bloodshed. Let’s say no to all this. The world will end one day for sure. And the history (inaudible) were we stood from this. The history will (inaudible) what we did for this. This is a…this is a historical inhuman uh…event and we need to choose what to stand from it. Thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Applause) Our next speaker is Ahmed Cheema. AHMED CHEEMA: Respected Councilmembers and…fellow Canton residents, salaam alaikum peace be with you. Peace in Gaza, peace in the region, the world stopping the genocide…is again the reason why I’m here. I will borrow some words…uh…Congressman Ro Khanna. Not because, to show my political affiliation or…or any…thing of that sort. Just that these word were very simple, but kind of hit home you know with me. I’ve been watching this and following the…the…the atrocities for a long time, but uh…he mentioned these while he said that he would vote no, on the seventeen billion dollar…uh…aid package which is a blank check to…the…Israeli region. And he said “It is painfully obvious to the entire world, that what is needed today is a permit cease fire and a release of hostages. There come moments in a nation’s history when our actions reveal our values. This is such a moment.” Again, so if you think our values, your values than better then turning a blind eye to genocide in Gaza and the occupied territories, then this is our place…and it does matter. That the council brings forth the Resolution against genocide. Let’s focus on the issue on the issue at hand and not get derailed by…the whataboutism, a new that I learned. Uh…you know it’s prevalent in media…very prevalent. And uh…another thing you know, talking about revenue and investments as we were earlier…uh this Resolution is an investment in our future generations. There’s no monetary value attached to it, sure…maybe. Well there is like I just mentioned, seventeen billion dollars plus some, but it will pay dividends…in liberty and justice for all of humanity. KIM BELL: Kimberly Bell 1733 Morris Ave. In honor of your religion, I’m fasting today and tomorrow. Ok from my understanding, you guys voted to…or you’re working on stop….uh…all these dollar stores from coming in the area. Can you explain why Five Below is moving into the Rue 21 plaza right there where Walmart is. Five and Below is moving in there. I happen to be…be going to work one day and I pulled up…but I went in there a bought a lot of the Rue 21 stuff when they were going out of business for my little boutique I want to open. But…I asked them what are you putting in here and they said a Five and Below is going in here. Who okayed that? Like Meijer, do we need another grocery store in the Stark County area? I understand it’s not in the City, but you can best believe our City earnings and or dollars…the clocks not moving. That our money…our City dollars and our earnings is…is going to that store. Stop turning your heads to look the other way. Did these billionaires come to open up these stores in our City? I remember Walmart could not open a store in certain states. Wouldn’t allow them to come in. Why did you...why did you all…why…I know it’s not in the City, Meijer is not in the City, but I’m pretty sure you have some say so over somethings that goes on in the County. And you said you was going to change the game…you…you…you claim every time we elect you, that this is going to change and that’s going to change and that’s going to change. So, let’s change the business of this chamber. I…I asked you the first…I asked the last Mayor and I’m asking this Mayor to come up with…I mean it won’t take all the time, but come up with a way to let us leave with answers that we…with to questions that we came in here too…asked you. It’s…you got…we got three minutes to talk, I’m sure it won’t take you, whoever decides to answer the question…it won’t take you three minutes to answer the question. Figure something different out. It’s a reason why we put you in office. Figure something out to help us. You know…you know…I…yea I know how I feel about murder the of James Williams. You turned your head away from that incident. When…when Canton Police Officer killed that man in his home, in his backyard cause he’s firing off a gun on New Years, which we all do, I don’t….I don’t…I can’t own a gun but…you…you…you turned your heads to that one. And that night those six little girls who saw their father murdered, had to go back into the home and clean up their father’s blood. They had to clean up their father’s blood that they witness the Canton Police Officer her…murdered him. And you all looked the other way. Can somebody raise their hand and asked who checked on Marquetta and the girls since…since this incident? You’re not talking you’re just raising your hand. Nobody checked on those six little girls who cleaned up their father’s blood. Every now and then I do cook a meal and take them a roast and potatoes or a pot of spaghetti or a pan lasagna I’ll cook. My name is Brion Johnson I’m from Alliance, Ohio, 1390 South Liberty Ave. I am here with my family uh…members Masjid Alrahman of Canton. Once again I’m here to speak with…speak with you on the issue of a demand for a cease fire. If I could take a moment please…(turns to the audience) *Can I ask for your daughter to stand up brother…can I can I ask your son to stand up* …(turns to face Council). On either side of me, which you looking at is two very young children. Look at their faces. Do you see the joy of life in them? The positivity of what the future might hold for them? As we speak in Palestine, thousands of children just like these two, they’re not running around with joy in their eyes. They’re not looking forward to the future. They’re lying in linen sacks, sown up to the neck…their faces are exposed but they don’t look like children anymore. The fat…the fatty tissue is gone from beneath their skin. Their skin itself is gone from that joyest lif…ligh…lively look. To a pale dead cast because they are in fact dead. The starved to death. This isn’t an issue of short term…they didn’t get food here or there. They haven’t eaten since October. They’re families as we speak are eating a combination of hay, oats, sand, and water either the nearby gutter or an ocean. I served in the Navy from 1991 to 1997. One thing I had to learn was how to survive incase my ship sunk. I was taught extensively about ocean water. I’m certain you understand that the salinity of the ocean water not contribute to what a person needs from water. In facts it detracts from it. This is Canton, Ohio…it isn’t New York, it isn’t Chicago, but it is the home of the Football Hall of Fame. Don’t for one minute think your voices don’t matter. They do. And on an international stage your voice is just as loud as New York, Chicago, or LA. I’m begging you…on the behalf of thousands and children…thousands of children in Palestine…speak loud, speak strong, speak as your morals would demand. Ask for an end to the fighting and a change to feed the children. I’m done. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Applause) Our last speaker is Eissa Attar…I believe. And of you could give us your name and residential address sir. EISSA ATTAR: Good evening everyone. My name is Eissa Attar I resided at 4632 11th St NW Canton, Ohio. Uh…thank you for giving me the opportunity. Uh…what I ask for the same thing with the others before me about the cease fire Resolution, to save the lives in Gaza. What is happening Gaza is beyond any description beyond any imagination. There are thousands and thousands women and children get killed for no reason except they are Palestinian. Their homes are gone…destroyed. And most of you may would ask what would this Resolution would do, what would change in the ground. Why should we do it here? (Inaudible) a short story. In 2008, my son used to a student at Ohio State University. I would go visit him every month in Columbus. And whenever I go there, on the corner of one of the streets…stood a man and wife with a sign that says stop the war in Iraq. And every time I go visit my son, this couple were there. Rain, shine, snow, cold, they were there. One day I stopped and talked to them and I asked them “ What’s going on here? Why you doing this I just want to know.” And he said “Well you are the only one who asked us that. Many people ask the same thing. Why you it, why do you care, what would do, what would change anything.” He said “I’ll do it because I want everybody that knows me…my coworkers, my people that go to the church, my neighbors, my friends, that I stand for… *Fire alarm goes off* PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Oh that’s not you. I don’t know what’s going on. Just hold on one moment. It’s the fire alarm. EISSA ATTAR: I didn’t does this though (laughing). PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: I know you did not (laughter). PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Yes…I’m sorry sir I think that was…yea you still have time if you would like. EISSA ATTAR: (Inaudible) So, again…when I visit my son I would standing in the road. When get to talk to them I was asking the same thing like all of us do. Why do you it, what make change in the ground, would change anything in the ground. And he told me the same thing I would tell you. (Inaudible) he said “I want all all the people I know…all the friends, neighbors, coworkers, the people I go to church with that I said for stopping this war. I stand for saving the lives of innocent life (inaudible) in the war. Then he went say that “And someday when I meet my Lord I want him to know that I did everything possible within my power to stop this war. And I (inaudible) the same thing. This Resolution might make change in the ground. Might not the stop the killing or death, but what it would do….it would send a clear and loud message that even though we don’t know these people, even though we don’t to share the message with them, even though we don’t share their faith or value or the color of their skin…we stand with the humanity. We stand with the saving of life with children and women who are killed for no reason (inaudible) except they are Palestinians. So, again I hope that you pass this Resolution. When you think about this, you think about the life of the women and children. And if we all act that way and we all look at this as women and children as humans like us this would be a better place.
