Um… I’ll remind everyone you have three minutes, and hopefully our timer will be working so you can actually track your progress. And when I call your name I’ll ask you to approach the podium and give us your name and your residential address. Our first speaker is Rami Hamdan. RAMI HAMDAN: Hello. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Yes. Name… yes. RAMI HAMDAN: Rami Hamdan, 7692 Peachmont Avenue NW, Canton, Ohio. Okay, so… um, I’m gonna show you guys a picture. You might not be able to see it. This is a young boy named (pronounced “Fay-zil”) (Last name inaudible). And I’m gonna tell you a little story about him. This young boy, Fazil (sp?) (last name inaudible), six members of his family, including his father and pregnant mother were executed in December inside their (inaudible) home in northern The Gaza Strip. As Fazil and his six year old brother, Adam, watched, four others were wounded including Fazil himself who was wounded in the stomach. Displaced Gazans staying in the home were also murdered and wounded. While I was… this is a quote from him, a little six year old boy, “While I was sleeping in the living room with mama, they blew up the main door and then the other door. When the IOF came in, I hid in the room. They then executed my mother and my father. Then they threw a bomb and they told us to go to school, but I went to the hospital.” His seven months pregnant mother was shot in the stomach by the IOF Israeli soldiers, one of the thousands of examples of the heinous intention of genocide and ethnic cleansing. Despite his wounds, Fazil persevered, carrying a burden that no child should have to endure. A reporter asked him afterwards, what would you like to say to the Israelis. After reflecting for a moment, he replied, “they are not nice.” His brother Adam said he saw his father’s soul leaving his withering body, a seen no child should bear. Yet thousands like Fazil and Adam share this experience. Over twelve thousand children have been murdered in Gaza since October 7th and hundreds of thousands are starving. Adam wants the rights of his parents. Adam’s only wish is for the war to end, and as of three days ago, Fazil and Adam were able to evacuate Gaza for medical treatment. Fazil said he wants to eat hamburgers, kabob and pizza. Um… we’re just asking you guys to just put up a resolution for a ceasefire. The President did it, Kamala Harris did it, in her babbling (inaudible). So if you guys could do it, it would be great. It would show that you COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 116 MINUTES OF THE MEETING MARCH 11, 2024 guys care about your community here, you know, the most vulnerable ones. Especially in the city of Canton, the most vulnerable city… you know, the most vulnerable part of the city. Um… I talk to you guys and I get worried sometimes because we’re Muslims, we don’t deal with alcohol, lottery… uh, especially in my business, and I was talking to one of the Council Members and the response was, well it makes money, you know. That’s not the way we need to be thinking. That’s not productive. That’s not good for the community. So I invite you guys to our mosque, if you would like to come meet us and see who we are, an… an extended hand. But we’re calling for a ceasefire. We would like to see you guys do that. Um… there’s many more stories. I could come here every single Monday and tell you guys the most horrific things. I’ve seen people run over by bulldozers. Women… I can’t even tell you about the stories of what they’re doing to women and we’re paying for every single thing that’s happening over there. And there’s American soldiers there too. Thank you so much. (Buzzer sounds) PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Applause) Our second speaker… and the first name, it’s hard to read, it’s Ja… Jasick Bennett. I’m sorry if I did not read that correctly. If you could approach and give us your name and residential address, sir. JOSIAH BENNETT: In the name of Allah. My name is Josiah Ali Bennett, 200 High Avenue SW, Canton, Ohio. Um… ceasefire is really a loaded word. It’s a proxy propaganda, just like the entire event going on over there in Gaza. It’s just covering up the fact that the Jesuit Order, the… uh, New World Order wants to give the Jews their third temple so they can have their false Messiah control the world. And the Bible says in the Old Testament that Moses and Joshua and them were ordered to… to destroy every living thing in the valley that was a gentile, and that’s exactly what the Jews believe the time is now, that we are all the gentiles and their entire world is the valley. So they believe that, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, and in their kingdom three’s no gentiles. And I don’t see any Jewish people. I don’t see no yamakas. So they think that they’re gonna bring the kingdom of Earth on… the kingdom of heaven on Earth, meaning all of you are their enemy. So it’s really… a ceasefire means nothing to me honestly, cause I’m a Muslim and I know what’s gonna happen. The Hadith… the… the prophecy of (inaudible)… every syllable he said is gonna come to fruition. He already predicted face time fourteen hundred years ago. He said before the appearance of the Mamak Ti, a Muslim from the East will be able to see and speak to a Muslim from the West without leaving their homes. Go home and look at your iPad next time you think about Muhammad (inaudible) because he probably is the one who invented it. Subhanallah. So I’m not here to tell you that Muslims of the world are weak people and we’re done because we’re not. We’re living forever. So the only fire that is gonna be ceased or need to cease is the fire of Johan, which won’t be touching me or the people of Gaza ever. Subhanallah. So you can send a resolution to the Federal government, you know, the… the Judge will order… we… I know that these pieces of paper won’t do anything because the only pieces of paper that are gonna be doing things is the book of Revelation and the Holy Quran and the Hadith that was brought to us from the prophet Muhammad (inaudible), so honestly I… I just want you guys to be human, you know what I’m saying, and just change your hearts about that, but if you want to send that paper in, fine. If you don’t, just… just come up and tell us no. You know what I’m saying? So then we can come back here and we talk about something else. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. All… they couldn’t pick nobody, so I… I lost my… I lost majority of my business. Every now and then I’ll have… um… uh… uh… AKP Properties called me… uh… uh… the (inaudible). But I… I…I’m… I’ve lost everything cause of that Covid from… with my cleaning business. So I gave you guys a business plan, cause I worked in the plaza where the laundromat is where Avis Rental Car is and Happy’s Pizza. I worked in that laundromat, Laundry Express. Well, there’s some vacant… uh, suites in the… in the plaza and I thought about putting a resale shop of used clothe… clothing in there. And you know, mine’s could be different from Plato’s, Clothes Mentor’s, Encore… I worked for Encore, I worked for Paula Tscholl and RuthMary Tscholl. I worked for them for three years. I even… when RuthMary broke her hip, I lived with her and… for about two months, they paid me, but my… my shop would be different because those shops, they only buy current. Nowadays the… the younger generation are pulling their grandmothers’ and their grandfathers’ clothes and firs out of the closet and they’re bringing things back. They bro… they’re bringing back bell bottoms, so I wouldn’t buy… I…. I would… I would go further than more… the last two years. I would buy from the sixties to current. They only buy for the last three years styles. Mine’s would be different, so I will give you more information about that. I’m working with Chris here. He’s gonna send me some emails. SHAHAD AWADALLAH: Um… hello, I’m Shahad Awadallah. I… um, 3912 Timberview Street. Um… so to you, it may only be people dying, but to me, to my family, to the Palestinian people it’s our children, our mothers, our fathers, our grandparents. It’s our home being blown up in our faces, massacred by the thousand, starving in the millions. It is disheartening to have to stand here time and time again knowing that atrocities and war crimes continue to grow in severity and inhumanity, knowing that accountability is not being upheld. The least we can expect as… as humans is a ceasefire, and for Palestinians to be treated as nothing less than human beings. Thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, ma’am. (Applause) Our next speaker is Ahmed Cheema. If you could approach and give us your name and residential address. AHMED CHEEMA: Ahmed Cheema, 5155 Foxchase Avenue NW, Canton. Respective Council Members and fellow citizens, assalamualaikum, peace be with you. Unfortunately, our representatives at the highest level of government have been unable to stand for humanity. Unable to firmly stand against the crime of crimes, genocide. It’s for that reason once more I stand before you and bring the ongoing genocide in Gaza to your attention. The need for putting an end to the killing, returning hostages and for preventing World War III is now. We don’t have a lot of time. One of the City Council meetings I heard about, you know, programs like Safe Routes for School. It’s an amazing program designed to encourage and make it easier for students to walk and bike to school. Uh… unfortunately, when I think about that, I think about schools in Gaza that are used as bomb shelters… uh, and mass grave yards. That is if those buildings are lucky enough to survive, you know, being… being turned into rubble. By now we’re aware of Senior Airman, Aaron Bushnell, who set himself on fire to protest. He’s not alone. There’s several hundred active military U.S. … uh, members and veterans who actually met prior to the State of the Union address by our President. Um… Palestinians have several options to choose from to… for dying perfect deaths. I’ll just mention a few, starve to death slowly, die collecting aid from trucks, being killed by the snipers, get drawn into the open trying to get some supplies from, you know, COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 118 MINUTES OF THE MEETING MARCH 11, 2024 things that are parachuted off air… air drops… um, sometimes pallets falling on them and crushing them to… to death, infectious diseases. I mean, the things goes… the list goes on. Um… at the same time I see Israeli spokesmen, you know, wishing Ramadan Kareem, Happy Ramadan on… on… on television, which… I don’t know. I have no words to… to respond to that that could be used in this meeting. So if we’re serious about helping these people instead of building a port or doing something that’s gonna take forever, let’s stop killing them. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Buzzer sounds) Our next speaker is Annah Williams. If you would approach and give us your name and residential address, please. ANNAH WILLIAMS: My name is Annah Williams. I live in Victory Square at 1223 8th Street NE here in Canton City. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Yeah, and can you either pick up the microphone or speak a little more so that we can hear you better. Thank you. Thank you. ANNAH WILLIAMS: My name is Annah Williams. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Perfect. ANNAH WILLIAMS: I live in Victory Square at 1223 8th Street NE here in Canton City. Um… I’m here tonight to discuss some of the issue that have been ongoing there. As of March 3rd or 4th of this current month, we have had no management on site at our property. Our tenants are still trying to find new homes, as you guys are probably all aware with the circumstances ongoing at Victory Square. Um… right now we don’t have enough funds or help from those who have promised us, as the residents of Victory Square, that they would help us seek amends and fix the situation. Um… not to mention those that should be held accountable for not doing their due diligence with the property having scored so low multiple years in a row is still an issue at hand. Um… we’re not even the only property in the city that is experiencing the same situations like Skyline Terrace, SMHA scattered sites and the actual project sites as well. Chips… they’re all having the same situations that we’re having. It’s an ongoing situation. I know that working with different members of the city throughout this ordeal since I started engaging in it… um, I know that there is a lot more that can be done if we can actually make it work to enforce the rules and regulations that are upon housing, especially since the majority of Canton are renters and Canton City has a very high poverty rate, which means most of our tenants are low income and need low income housing. But the majority of you sitting at the circle right now would not live in the locations that we live. You wouldn’t live in the situations that we deal with. So I’m just here more or less asking that we can actually fix the standard quo that we have right now, the status quo, because if the standard isn’t even where we’re at right now in Victory Square with over forty families being displaced for negligence on the owner or property management companies, city building inspecting, whomever it may fall on… HUD as one of the main people that it should fall on, the main company or background program, however you want to word it, something needs to be done to make sure that they are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. That’s pretty much all I have to say, so… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you very much, ma’am. ANNAH WILLIAMS: Thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: If you would please approach. Yes. (Brief pause) Can somebody maybe hand him the mic. That would be wonderful. Thank you. BROTHER JAMES: Thank you, thank you. Thank you (inaudible). PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you. Your name and residential address, sir. BROTHER JAMES: Assalamualaikum. Brother… (inaudible). My bro… Brother James. I live at 515 5th Street NW… uh, Canton, Ohio, Wilson Pointe Apartments right here in downtown Canton. And… uh, I want to begin with a great man, Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Vietnam War called for a ceasefire. And in calling for this ceasefire, he took a great deal of flak, a lot of people turned against him. Maybe this is even part of the reason why certain factions wanted to kill him. In his speech… as soon as I find my place here… in 1967 at Riverside Church, King detailed the devastating costs of the Vietnam War and described millions of children and women who were killed by American bombs in the sixties. Bombs and bullets, and the poor masses were… were not spared to slaughter, only to face a slow and painful death of disease and starvation just as it is now in Gaza. Then King turned to his so called enemy, the North Vietnamese, even if we do not condone their actions, King said in his speech, surely we must see that the men we supported pressed them to their violence. They were pressed into violence. Surely we must see that our own computerized plans of destruction simply dwarf their greatest acts. In the fight for justice and humanity, King’s words resonate today. Unlike in King’s time, sixty-one percent of potential voters support a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Anti-war protests abound across the nation and across this world. We can in the United States, as King would ask the nation, move forward from here. In the 1960’s King grappled with the very question on one hand and he felt a deep solidarity with the Jewish struggle against the persecution, and on the other hand he rejected the violence of occupation of the Palestinian lands that would run counter to this noble cause. He saw resolution… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Te… ten seconds, sir. BROTHER JAMES: Okay. He saw resolution through a commitment of breaking cycles of violence and practicing (buzzer sounds)… worldwide fellowship that lifts neighborly concerns. We are neighbors. (Applause) PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. BROTHER JAMES: And after peace. Thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you. And our final speaker this evening is Nadine Salem, and if Nadine Salem could approach and give us your name and residential address, ma’am. NADINE SALEM: Uh… Nadine Salem, 8220 North Casswell Circle. Council Members, my name is Nadine Salem. I’m an engineer, recent graduate from the University of Akron, 2018 graduate from Hoover High School and a lifelong member of this community. Today, however, I’m speaking to you as a Palestinian American. One of my favorite memories of my childhood was sitting in my fifth grade class at Northwood Elementary with Mrs. (pronounced “Du-meeko”), celebrating our heritage during Dia de la Raza with my COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 120 MINUTES OF THE MEETING MARCH 11, 2024 classmates. One student came dressed in a kilt, another with cookies made by her grandmother with countless others proudly representing their roots, Scotland, Italy, Argentina and of course Palestine. Memories like that flood my mind as I think about this community embraced me and my background. They embraced the part of me that held my parents’ homeland in my heart. They listened empathetically as I recounted stories from my own travels back home and the hardships my family endured under Israeli occupation. As I reflect on those memories, however, I can’t help by ask… but ask myself why is today any different? My community will listen to my stories, eat our food and embrace our culture, even give condolences after seeing the news, but why won’t they stand up for injustice? I was born and raised in North Canton, but what if instead of Northwood Elementary I had grown up as a fifth grader in Palestine. What are the odds that I’d become one of over twelve thousand children murdered in cold blood by an Israeli air strike. I ask myself that everyday. There’s an alternate world where instead of paying taxes here in the U.S., I was killed by a missile paid by those same tax dollars. Council Members, now is the time to prove to us, your Palestinian constituents here in Northeast Ohio, that we belong and that you put… you believe that our people deserve to live. The reality on the ground is dyer, entire residential buildings leveled, hospitals bombed, people gun downed by Israeli soldiers while lining up for flour. War crime after war crime after war crime, all funded by 3.8 billion dollars of our tax money every year. As the holy month of Ramadan begins today for myself and many Muslims around the world, it reminds me to be grateful for the blessing of being able to break my fast each night after sunset. But my heart aches knowing that in Gaza a small child is crying in starvation as her mother stares at her helplessly with nothing to provide. Inaction is complicity. You’re probably thinking to yourself that local resolutions don’t matter, that talking about this today here in Canton, Ohio is pointless, but while we can’t stop the destruction and violence by our vote here in one day, passing a ceasefire resolution condemning the violence is a principled stance in solidarity with basic human rights. With each community that stand up and passes a resolution, support of Palestinian lives, we are making a small but impactful step towards a shift in how our Federal government participates in these atrocities. There is no excuse. When I teach my future children about their heritage, let it be pride in a free and thriving Palestine, not through old photos of what once was. When I share where I’m from… (buzzer sounds) (inaudible)… not feeding memories of an imprisoned homeland. When the world asks what happened to Palestine, let it be a story of justice prevailing, not a cautionary tale of how history has once again repeated itself.
