It’s good to see all of you. If everyone would please turn your cell phones to vibrate, and with a quorum being present, the Chair calls this meeting of Canton City Council to order. And we have seven speakers this evening. Uh… I’ll remind those of you who have not been here, if there is anyone that has not been here, you have three minutes to speak and you can watch your time on the… on the uh… jumbotron. And uh… please uh… respect the three minutes so everyone has their chance to speak. Our first speaker is Rami Hamdan. Please step forward and give us your name and your residential address, sir. RAMI HAMDAN: Rami Hamdan, 7692 Peachmount Ave. Uh… hello respected members of City Council. Uh… I know the statement you know you said last time, but we’re not going to give up. We’re here today again to get your guys support for an Informal Resolution for a ceasefire. It has been documented extensively that the atrocities committed on a daily basis… are considered genocide. And there is no justification for this. We need you to stand up for justice. We need you to stand up for humanity and we need you to stand up or us. I think to myself on daily bases what am I going to say at the next meeting, uh… mostly in shower (he laughs). These people must be hearing us they must be seeing what’s going on. They can’t be completely blinded by the racist rhetoric about Muslims and Palenstians and Arabs. That we deserve this type of treatment. Why don’t they just do it to get rid of us. You know you have better things to do… you know like stuff for the city. Just do it to get rid of us. Uh… but it must be something deeper… I’m not sure. Uh… but for my Christian brothers and sisters… we have to remember that Jesus or (inaudible) like his mother called him, was a Palestinian. And he would 100% stand for a ceasefire… and there’s no doubt in that. Palestinians are his people. Uh… I’m just going to give you a little update on what’s been going on today. Northern areas of the Gaza Strip are facing an unprecedented health and environmental crisis. Threating serious health and environmental consequences for over 700,000 residents… amid accumulating mountains of waste, hundreds of temporary mass graves and rubble from various areas. Over 75,000 tons of waste are scattered while hundreds of thousands of tons of rubble and debris from homes destroyed by the occupation that are also present. This waste has led to the spread of infectious disease among the thousands of citizens including hepatitis and skin disease and has become a fertile environment for the (inaudible) flies, mosquitoes, insects, and harmful reptiles. The environmental impact is exasperated by citizens setting fire to it causing harmful smoke pollution. The piles of rubble and degree from homes containing the decomposed bodies of thousands of martyrs represents… I’m sorry you guys…uh represent a serious health and environmental health crisis as odors emanate from them. Subjecting them to disturbance by animals and stray dogs. Increasing the transmission of diseases and infections and compromising the human dignity of these martyrs who have not been very (inaudible). Adding to this catastrophic scene is the spread of hundreds of temporary mass graves. They were killing people in the hospital and then hiding them…you under mass graves. So we really need you guys to just put in an Informal Resolution to say… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Ten seconds… RAMI HAMDAN: …ceasefire… we’re on the brink of World War 3. I don’t know if you guys been aware of what’s going on with Iran, it’s because Israel has been unchecked. My name is Josiah Ali… uh… lifelong resident of Canton, Ohio 200 South High Street. Uh… 200 High St SW. So I’d like to remind the Council of the ini… iniqu… uh I’d actually like to speak to uh…the people actually in this room. As well as the Council…uh of the inevitability of what is to come in the days leading, the war and conflict in Palestine. *Speaker took a moment of silence* That is what we’ll be leading. The end of everything we know… as humanity. Again I must remind you… the enemy of the so called Jews that are occupying Palestine, the Zionist, sees each and every one of us in this building as gentiles. And their mission is to bring heaven on earth. And in their heaven… gentiles do not belong. So, a ceasefire for Palestine is ceasefire for Canton, Ohio. A ceasefire for Palestine is a ceasefire for Ashanti Monroe. A ceasefire for Palestine is a ceasefire for Crystal Smith… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Uh… please don’t… don’t address them personally. We don’t do that. Don’t address them personally… JOSIAH ALI: A ceasefire for Palestine is ceasefire for every single human being in this room. A ceasefire for Palestine is ceasefire for every single human being in this room. What I… what I would like to ask is like you said, the future is in this room… it’s looking very bi-racial. It’s looking very Palestinian. And I ask these … these… these young leaders and… and… and these children to not be captured is the word they use when you join the illuminati, when you join the Masons, when you join the Zionist, you are captured. Do not sell your souls for worldly gain… for a world that is no longer going to exist. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Sir…sir…sir you need to address Council and not our lovely young guests. Continue. That is all. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you. Our next speaker is Hasan Muheisen… Muhe… Muhe… I’m terrible at this, I’m sorry sir. Your name and residential address please sir. HASAN MUHEISEN: My name Hasan Muheisen my address is 615 Rodeo St. Louisville, Ohio. I think we are here to talk peace. When we say As-Salamu Alaykum, we give you the peace from us to you. When we say As- Salamu Alaykum, also we say Shalom Aleichem in Hebrew that means peace. When we say peace that means we have to work for peace, not work for killing. Not supporting killing of the children or races. We want to save the children of Palestine. We want to save the children of also the Israelian children, not just the Palestinian children because… when I want to talk about what happened back in my family, 1948, my Uncle got killed he was a police officer in Jerusalem. He got killed and left three beautiful kids behind him. They were suffering because they lost their father for (inaudible) until now, some of them still alive and some of them died. When I say I’m with Gaza, the one who (inaudible) thirty thousand or thirty-five thousand people got killed for no reason. The reason is… just someone who asked for peace we need peace for our children, we need peace for our mind. Some of them want (inaudible) they want to say no, we want…we don’t want peace we want piece of land. Piece of land is different than peace of mind, peace for our children. And when I say my father got COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 126 MINUTES OF THE MEETING APRIL 15, 2024 injured also, in 1949 he even in East Jerusalem, he was suffering for almost fifty-seven years from the bullets in his leg until he died. God bless him. He was suffering from that bullet but seventy-five or eighty-five thousand people got injured in Gaza and seeing how much suffering they’ve had. We see a lot of children, they lost their schools… not even just in Gaza, in Jerusalem, West Bank. Even yesterday… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Ten seconds… HASAN MUHEISEN: …the settlers attacked the civilians. That’s seventy-five maybe…*Buzzer* …and we’re asking for you to support the peace and ensure that we achieve it. Thank you. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you, sir. (Applause) …Our next speaker is Ahmed Cheema. Mr. Cheema if you would approach and again state you name residential address. AHMED CHEEMA: Ahmed Cheema, 5155 Foxchase Ave NW. Respected Council… members of the community, As-Salamu Alaykum peace be with you. City Councils in Akron, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Athens, Cincinnati voted on and passed ceasefire resolutions. Similar to the one I and several other members of the Canton community have been advocating for… weeks. These City Councils just like this one… in Ohio are local governing bodies and foreign policy’s decisions are beyond their purview as well. Because there is a long standing history of hostilities in the region of Israel and Palestine, that seem to restart as soon as there’s a pause… that is exactly the reason why a ceasefire is more important than ever before. Enough is enough. There has been too much violence and bloodshed and disregard of basic human rights. City Councils in other cities do not have the international diplomatic sophistication to go beyond the local level, but it’s one thing that Council Members in those City Councils have demonstrated, love for humanity and preservation of life. As I have said multiple times during my address to the honorable Council, this ceasefire resolution is a symbolic gesture no one expects anything else from the City Council beyond its capabilities. A few Council Members are concerned that voting on a ceasefire resolution will risk alienating members of our community. Again, I remind the Council of Akron, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Chicago, Willington, Cambridge, Albany State College, Providence, Madison, Seattle, etc. the list goes on of the cities. Just like our city of Canton, these cities are home to people from diverse backgrounds and faith traditions. I thank all Council Members for their involvement. I know we are being heard but sometimes… I question how many are actually listening. Canton, Ohio City Council operates under the Home Rule which shifts governing power to the state, to county and municipal governments. This means that this City Council does have the ability to vote on an Informal Resolution and that is what my request is. Pass or fail… please vote. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Ten seconds... (Applause) Our next speaker is David Kerestes. Did I get that right? Maybe… anyway if you could give us your name and residential address please. DAVID KERESTES: My name is uh… David Kerestes I’m at 626 Walnut Ave NE. And I’m here to speak on the word entitlement cause I’m quite baffled and befuddled and bewildered at what this country has changed since the 1919 Volstead Act that has been repealed in the Syntax come in. And bringing in the different the mindset unto the nation, but when I think about the Pledge of Allegiance and the fact that there’s supposed to be justice unto all and look… uh at what I would considered my civic duty unto my nation which all have that so COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 127 MINUTES OF THE MEETING APRIL 15, 2024 you’re not outside of the ramification of yourself. You do have civic duty uh… and… and so the word is government program providing benefits to members of a specific group, senators, military, elected and employed officials… that type. So, uh... we have no Aristocracy. To me that’s no more than blasphemy when you change the law and have a different… uh… entitlement for others based off who you are in this society. Uh… and then when I look at uh… how that would compromise freedom for someone who like me cause I’m not a veteran, I’m not a cop… nobody special, but I think the Emancipation Proclamation was meant for all of us. In school, I was taught we were the Totalitarian Society. So, for me I watched this nation being destroyed I watch our money going elsewhere creating weapons and wars. Bringing back PTSD which I have from Green Beret father. Uh… creating a bad society in our uh… nation. So, you know when I’m thinking that they uh… characteristic and criminal conducted in our elected and employed officials who are involved in the Syntax violating the Civil Rights as Christian… has become common action from authorities and the civilian population in this nation makes me sick to my stomach. It really does. Uh…God doesn’t exist in the country like it used too. Uh… and so for me I’m just trying to cope with that. Cope with how I have fires… uh you know I dealt with my father beating me and the domestic violence came out he still did it. Nobody did anything. And I was beating at the Rikered Building by adult signing a paper saying I would sue Steve Meredith who accused me of something I didn’t do. Then as I got older I watched my daughter get beaten by Dessert Storm Canton Cop black and blue and that was covered up as well. So, for me I think the beginning of the end is when you let people investigate their own people, because that’s where you fail. Thank you. And I would like to say…uh…you did well cleaning up 9th St and all the people smoking meth on 2nd St, 9th St, and hanging out selling the crack in front of the stores. And if you would please approach the podium and give us your name and residential address for the record. TINA RHODES: Tina Rhodes, 2227 Strasser Pl SW Canton, Ohio. Uh… I’m here… I’m here about the Homeless Coffee House at 800 Smith Ave. SW. Uh… it started out to be a place to help homeless people, drug addicts, uh… maybe AA people too I don’t know. Uh… but it’s come to be a very big nuisance… uh the people hang outside and they, and this is when they open too not just when they’re closed, uh…doing drugs and … uh… urinating on the building. Uh… things like that…uh and I just want to see something done. There’s a lot of violence there. There’s been cops there many times for fi… fighting and stuff between people that got there. And… uh… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: And that address one more time so we can note that please… TINA RHODES: Oh 800 Smith Ave. SW. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Thank you. TINA RHODES: It’s called the Homeless Coffee House I believe is what they call it. Uh… it’s right on… uh… alley where I live. Uh… Smith and Strasser. And my house is kind of caddy corner from it so I see a lot of what goes on there. And… uh sorry I’m not used to doing this. PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: That’s quite alright. TINA RHODES: Uh… the people stay there day and night even after it closes. They’re supposed to be out of there by I think it’s six o' clock now. It was five but now I think it’s six. And they still stay there all night hanging do… uh some of them doing drugs, some of them are getting into fights like last night. There was a big fight between two…two of them. One guy accused the other of trying to steal something from him and he went COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 122 JOURNAL PAGE 128 MINUTES OF THE MEETING APRIL 15, 2024 after him with a big old wrench. They were pounding on a big sign making noise. It was just horrible you know. I had to call the police. Uh… I… I’m even afraid to let my grandchildren come over and come outside during the day to play because these people are just there. Uh... some of them tweaking as I guess they call it today. Need another fix I guess. Uh… and like I said even during the day they urinate on the building. I’ve caught many of them doing that. And where I live, next to my house there was a big patch of… uh trees and stuff and we had to cut them down. I caught a man… I seen him go in there one day and there’s no way out of there it’s just uh… a closed place. And he was undressing and taking a bath… with a bottle water. Uh… I was not happy about that… uh… you know. And I’m really tired of the violence and the drug use and you know and uh… things like that I said about taking a bath and the you know so we had to cut all them trees down and get rid of them. Uh… and they’re… steal… PRESIDENT BATES AYLWARD: Ten seconds. TINA RHODES: …they steal I caught them… uh… looking in my car trying to open up my car door, my husband’s car door. In regards to the coffee house… uh it’s also lingering over to uh… The Total Living Center. They have a deck out back. They go over there a lot of times try to break in over there. Uh…as a matter of fact I think they have broken in at one time. Uh… The neighbors behind us have had to put out expensive money for fencing, to put a privacy fence up because they go over there and tease their dogs and there’s an alley behind us they leave grocery carts back there all kinds of trash. Uh… the neigh… there’s another neighbor on the other side of us uh… they’ve had found where they have tried to make a bed I guess found teddy bears all kinds of stuff they were hiding back in there. It is really becoming a big nuisance in that area. And we’ve done everything that we could now it’s time that we’re asking for help from you. And that really about all I got to say at the moment.
