Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission Discussion Notes July 15, 2021 This meeting of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission was held on July 15 at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office on May 20. Chairman Wigginton called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS The following announcements were made:  The meeting is being recorded.  Meeting information for this commission, along with provisions for public access, is posted on the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission web page.  Essential business of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission is being conducted during this meeting. Members Present: Jon Berry, Nathan Croslin, Tom Retnauer (Vice-Chair), Anthony Riley, Adrianna Rivera, Mark Warack, Lisa Wigginton (Chair) Members Absent: Daniel Booth, Michele Catalano, Efrem Graham Stacey Mansfield, Amy Massey, Kim Painter, Lauren Seward Staff Present: Mike Barber and Joe Ruthenberg ROLL CALL Joe Ruthenberg called the roll. Attendance did not reflect a quorum with 7 voting members present, 8 voting members absent. MINUTES: Approval of Meeting Minutes: Chairman Wigginton asked if there were any corrections to the April minutes as presented. There were no corrections and the minutes are approved. REPORTS: a. Committee Reports:  Fundraising/ Budget/Long Term Events – The commission reviewed the Chesapeake Arts Weekend. The event was well attended despite rain on Saturday. Artist response was very positive, as well as from the public. There was a discussion about things that could be improved for next year’s event, including varying the entertainment on each of the days and working out the sound system problems that had occurred mostly on Sunday. Tentative dates were discussed for next year’s event and should be finalized in the near future.   Grants – Final project grants were paid to grant organizations for FY 21. Grant letters for FY22 will be mailed shortly to the grantees.  Arts Alive – No updates.  Public Art/ Individual Artists – o 9/11 Commission - Is close to finalizing the agenda for the Remembrance Ceremony in September. The flyby has been approved by the Navy but the commission is still awaiting FAA approval. o Public Art – The first draft of the bylaws has been completed, the committee is working on finalizing the makeup and goals of the committee. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:  None NEW BUSINESS:  There was a discussion about having artist booths at the July 3rd Celebrate Freedom event at City Park.  At the Chrysler Museum’s request, in partnership with the FAC and PRT, we have agreed to participate in their Outdoor Art Project, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Walter Chrysler Jr’s gift of more than 10,000 works of art to the City of Norfolk. Three artworks form the collection will be reproduced as banners for outside display in Chesapeake Parks. At Battlefield Park- The Lagoon of Saint Mark, Venice, at Oak Grove Lake Park – The Emerald Pool, and at Chesapeake City Park - The Florist. Other artwork and banners will be displayed throughout Hampton Roads. CITY BUSINESS:  Director Barber discussed the Cornland School project, including the history of the school as the oldest pre-Rosenwald school in Southeastern Virginia, and its history dating back to the early 1900’s. The school is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cornland School building will be a part of a proposed historic village that will entail moving the building from its current location to the new site.
